Students will be able to:

1) Count, sort, and classify M&M's by color.

2) Record data on a chart.
3) Use data from a chart to create a pictograph.
4) Use data from a chart to create a bar graph.
5) Use data from a chart to create a circle graph.
6) Analyze and interpret data.
7) Use data to figure ratios.
8) Use data to determine probability.
I will review concepts of compiling data and
representing their findings on a bar graph.
I will asks the students if they have ever eaten
M&Ms before, and what color the M&Ms were
that they ate.
I will then announce to students, Today we will
practice our graphing skills using M&Ms.
I will provide my students with pictures of
graphs so they can know how the
graphs look like. Also I will show a video.
What is a bar graph?
What is a circle graph?
What is a pictograph?
I will let my students know what the
procedures are before starting.
1) I will give each student one small bag of M&M's.
2) I will ask you to estimate how many M&Ms you have in all and record
your answer in the chart.
3) I will ask you to estimate how many of each color M&M you have and
record your answer in the chart.
4) I will ask you to open the bag, sort, and classify the M&M's according to
color.
5) I will ask students to use their data to create their own pictograph.
6) Compare graphs. You will discuss the differences and the similarities of
the graphs.
7) Get into small groups of 4-6 and combine your data and make a new
chart illustrating the results.
8) After discussing bar graphs, create and color a bar graph using the
new figures.
9) We will combine all of the data to include on a class graph. Round the
numbers to the nearest tens for ease in creating a circle graph.
I will ask my students if they found this
lesson plan helpful.
I will ask students if they have any
questions.
I will give them a home work assignment with
questions.
1) What was the most common color of M&Ms
in your bag?
2) What was the least common color of M&Ms in
your bag?
3) How do these results compare with the rest of
the class?
4) What was your favorite part of this
assignment?
5) What was most difficult about this assignment?
Productivity Tools Content Standard 2.3.1- Students
use appropriate productivity tools including, but
not limited to, word processing, spreadsheet,
database, multimedia and telecommunications.
The way I would teach my students would be by
letting them have time on the computer while
using Jumpstart Typing software.
I would use this with my lesson plan of M&M
graphing and probability. I would use spreadsheet
and the students could create their own graphs.
Research Tools Content Standard 3.0- Students use
various technology tools to research information
and evaluate its accuracy and appropriateness in
order to solve problems and make decisions in my
classroom. I would teach 3.3.1 Select a research
topic or define a problem using technology tools.
I would have my students research a topic related
to one of my lesson plans. My students will use the
computers and any other technology available in
my classroom and in the school.
Example if my students would choose the M&M
lesson plan they can use computers, calculators
and the smart board.
Tools and Processes Content Standard 4.0- Students will
identify, apply concepts, and manage various tools and
resources to evaluate their accuracy and appropriateness in
solving problems and making decisions. I would teach Tools
and Processes 4.3.3 Recognize the importance of safety in
computer and technology applications.
I would teach my students about safety in computers
because safety comes first and I believe our students have
the right to know what they can expect from using a
computer and technology.
I would use a lesson plan to teach my students about the
safety with computers I would use these
websites.http://www.cerias.purdue.edu/education/k12/infos
ec_activities/k5_curriculum.php and
http://cybersmartcurriculum.org/cyberbullying/ncsa/lessons/.
Content Standard 5.0- Students will recognize that
systems are made up of individual components
and that each component affects the operation
of the system and its relationship with other systems.

Define a system by first letting them know the

definition which is a system of one or more
computers and associated software with common
storage.
I would let them know when their working with the
computers.
Society Content Standard 6.0- Students will evaluate the impact
and ethical implications on individuals, society and the
environment. I will teach my students about 6.3.1. Describe how
technology is used in daily activities to meet personal needs.
Describe computer piracy and the personal consequences of
inappropriate use.
I will describe about computer piracy and consequences of
inappropriate use I will use this website
http://www.netsmartz.org/educators.htm to teach my students
about the big responsibility of using computers. Also how
technology is used in daily activities to meet personal needs.
Ex: I will let them know that an important advantages is the
access to on line dictionaries, encyclopedias, maps, and other
resource material. Also how technology will provide my students
with the opportunity to communicate their knowledge in new
and exciting ways.
