For Unit 318 (Listening To Music), I chose
to study My Immortal (album version)
by Evanescence. During studying this
piece and looking at how my music taste
has changed through time I have
discovered that my music taste as a result
of studying My Immortal (album
version) by Evanescence has slightly
changed, however not too extreme. This
is because prior to this unit I was familiar
with this song and was fond of it and
other pieces from the band. Conversely
though I did start to listen to the band on
a more common basis and started to
explore their newer material. This
resulted in me actually buying tickets to
see Evanescence live and provoked me to
start to learn some of their pieces on
guitar. Therefore my music taste did not
change but strengthened due to this
piece.
For Unit 318 (Listening To Music), I chose to
study You Got A Friend In Me by Randy
Newman. During studying this piece and
looking at how my music taste has changed
through time. prior to this unit I had
knowledge of this piece due to my childhood
memories and preferences, as this piece was
the theme tune to Toy Story(one of my
favorited films) however it was sung by a
different person. Through this unit I have
discovered that my music taste as a result of
studying You Got A Friend In Me by Randy
Newman, This was because I liked the tune
and the musical arrangement of this song,
however I do not like the singers voice. Upon
studying this piece I realised that, the artists
voice was husky and to an extent distorted.
This therefore did not cause any change to
my musical taste as I did not research the
artist as extensively as the artist of my piece
one as I was not as keen on this artist.
IN CONCLUSION DURING THIS UNIT 318
(LISTENING TO MUSIC) MY MUSIC TASTE
HAS .
.changed slightly, due to my Piece one (My Immortal (album version) by
Evanescence). However my music taste has not changed at all as a result of my
Piece two (You Got A Friend In Me by Randy Newman).
My musical tastes now
Hip hop I tend to listen to this when I am revising or away because the music and
the intelligent lyrical language as well as the fast tempo it keeps me awake.
Rock- I often listen to this whatever I am doing. This is because this is preferred
genre of music that I choose to perform and listen to. Also rock has a vast amount
of subgenres that it caters to my differing moods.
Metal- I seem to listen to this when practicing or learning new pieces on guitar,
this is because metal music usually has strong and intense guitar focus.
Soundtrack- I seem to listen to this during emotionally low times, because they are
based on emotional events.
Reggae- I tend to listen to this in the summer on long car journeys. This is because
it is a happy and energetic type of music so it relate to summer time and in
addition it is relaxing and emphases beats 2 and 4 unlike all other music I listen to.
Pop- I tend to listen to this when travelling and listening to radio with my family.
This is because it is popular and always changing and so it never becomes boring.
Country- I listen to this when I am at my grandparents. This is because this is my
grand parents favourite genre of music and helps me to relate a common interest
to them.
EDM- I tend to listen to this when I am upbeat and in a hyperactive mood. This is
because it is energetic and always changing much like me.
For example: Click here Major key- this contradicts the theme of
the song which is portrayed through the
lyrics as a major key is usually happy.

Instruments:
The theme is the effects of a break up. Voice

One way which this is demonstrated is through the Guitar

For example the chorus: Syllabic one note per syllable in the

of sadness which this song is about.
bit lost without you

They use mostly primary chords in the verse and chorus (chords I, IV and V). The pattern of the chords sees the tonic (C Major) being
emphasised by the Dominant chord (fifth chord- G major ) which is played prior to it, this causes the sound to be upbeat. The lyrics (main
melody) is supported by using block chords in the accompaniment (piano and guitar) which amplifies the lyrics creating a homophonic
texture. With the piano and guitar being in the background but leaving the drum beat in the foreground causes the atmosphere to still be
upbeat. Yet the lyrics continue to contradict this by being about a negative event, a break up:
Every night I remember that evening
The way you looked when you said you were leaving
The way you cried as you turned to walk away
The cruel words and the false accusations
The mean looks and the same old frustrations
I never thought that we'd throw it all away
But we threw it all away.
However the verse changes this as the lyrics start of negative but this is minimalised by the use of the word Little as it makes the listener
believe that the person singing the song manages to take control of the situation:
And I'm a little bit lost without you
And I'm a bloody big mess inside
And I'm a little bit lost without you
This aint a love song this is goodbye (oooooh)
This aint a love song this is goodbye (ooooh)
This is one of my favourite pieces of music because it reminds me of my childhood as I used to play this song and the artist in the car when on long journeys.
Since looking further into the song and analysing what it means I now also have an emotional connection to the song. The piece reminds me of a previous
relationship and how much of a relief it was when it ended- This aint a love song this is goodbye. The sadness of the lyrics related to the emotion of how I
felt at the time (sad that it was over), however the upbeat music is identical to the decision I made upon reflection of the relationship and the break up.
