RUDIMENTS

Prepared by:
Daniel G. Vicencio
Find out why Ut was
changed to Do and why
Si was changed to Ti.

Extra Credit
(2 points)
Ut was changed to Do at the suggestion
of musicologue Giovanni Battista Doni
because Do was more ideal for vocalizing.
It was taken from the first syllable of his
surname.

Si was changed to Ti by 19th-century

music teacher Sarah Anna Glover to
differentiate the initial letter of Sol from
that of Si.

Whole note

The whole note has the longest

duration in modern music
notation.
Half note

The half note has half the

duration of a whole note.
Two half notes occupy the same
amount of time as one whole note.
Quarter note

The quarter note is a fourth

(or a quarter) of a whole note.
Four quarter notes occupy the same
amount of time as one whole note.

Two quarter notes equal the

duration of one half note.
Eighth note

Notes smaller in duration than a

quarter note have flags. Each flags
halves the value of a note.
Therefore, two eighth notes occupy the
same amount of time as one quarter
note.
Rests

Rests represent periods of

silence in a measure.
Whole rest

Whole rests are similar to whole notes with

one difference: Instead of 4 beats of sound,
we will have 4 beats of silence.

This means that 4 steady beats

of no sound going by (total silence)
equals 1 whole rest.
Half rest

Half rests are worth 2 beats of silence.

This means that every 2 beats of no playing or
singing (complete silence) equals 1 half rest.
How can we easily identify if
its a whole rest or a half rest???
A whole rest looks like an upside down hat
or a hole in the ground.

If you can see a flower growing up from

the ground of this type of rest, then you
know its a whole rest.
If you can imagine a person wearing this
hat, then you know its a half rest and
not a whole rest.
Quarter rest

Quarter rests are worth 1 beat of silence.

They are the quiet counterpart to quarter notes.
Eighth rest

It is the silent twin of the single eighth

note receiving only 1/2 a beat.
Eighth rest

This means it takes 2 eighth rests to equal 1

quarter rest.
A time signature tells you how the music
is to be counted. The time signature is
written at the beginning of the staff after
the clef and key signature.

Time Signature
Top number

A number 4 on top means there are 4 beats in each measure.

A number 3 on top means there are 3 beats in each measure.

A number 2 on top means there are 2 beats in each measure.

Bottom number

The number 4 on the bottom represents a quarter note receiving 1 beat.

The number 2 on the bottom represents a half note receiving 1 beat.

The number 8 on the bottom represents an eighth note receiving 1 beat.
