INTRODUCTION
1. Attitudes and motivation are key factors to successful
second language acquisition.
2. In Malaysias context, English is one of the compulsory
subjects taught in schools.
(The Malaysia Government Official Portal, 2012)
3. The government has launched many programmes in
creating awareness about the importance of mastering
English.
In shift 2 in Malaysia Education Blueprint (2013-2025) stated that
every child is proficient in Bahasa Malaysia and English Language.
The Dual Language programme aims to enhance English proficiency
in selected schools in Malaysia.
The Linus programme is aimed at ensuring that all Malaysian
children acquire basic literacy and numeracy skills after three years
of mainstream primary education.
PURPOSE OF STUDY

This study aims to examine pupils


attitudes and motivation towards
learning English as the second language.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
What are the language attitudes
1 towards the learning of English among
Year 4 pupils?

What are the language motivation


2 towards the learning of English among
Year 4 pupils?

Theoretical Perspectives
Attitude is defined as a tendency to respond
positively or negatively towards a certain thing
Attitudes such as an idea, object, person, or situation.

Motivation is defined as (emotion) and cognition


Motivation that stable variable of individual difference
(Zoltan, 2014)

Gardner (1985) stated that:


Attitudes and motivation have a very clear link with the language learning
process.
Students with positive attitudes and high level of motivation will be more
successful compared to those with negative attitudes and no motivation
