WOMEN PRE-1990S
1920 the ratification of the 19 th Amendment giving women the right to vote
1966 the National Organization of Women (NOW) was founded to help gain
more women's rights in America
1972 Title IX
SETTING THE STAGE
As the 1990s came a lot was changing in American society:
Stock market was increasing
Personal incomes were doubling
Computers were becoming huge
Email, instant-messaging, working from home
Women specifically:
Increase in college graduates
More successful careers for women (business and finance)
Saying You go girl was popular
WOMEN IN MEDIA IN THE 1990S
As the times turned in the 1990s women began to be portrayed in the media differently
Full-body shots were much more popular
Models were becoming thinner and thinner
Significantly less clothing being worn
All these changes being brought to the portrayal of women made an ideal woman to
mind
This led to the start of many eating disorders
Women were also viewed differently on covers of magazines
Overall women shown less than men
When they were shown, they were shown as girly girls and non-athletic
US WOMENS NATIONAL TEAM
The first ever Womens World Cup was held in 1991 in China
12 teams were in the tournament
USA won with a 2-1 victory over Norway
In 1995, the 2 nd Women's World Cup was held in Sweden.
USA took 3 rd place losing to the winners, Norway.
1996 was the first year that womens soccer was allowed in the summer Olympics
USA took gold over China 2-1
1999 WOMENS WORLD CUP
USA was host of the 1999 World Cup
In the first 3 games for the US crowds reach over 70,000
USA won all 3
In close quarterfinals and semifinals games, USA defeated Germany (3-2) and Norway (2-
0)
The final game against China was played at the Rose Bowl in front of over 90,000 fans
along over 40 million viewers online

Through 90 minutes plus extra time, the game was tied 0-0
USA and China both are tied 4-4 in p.k.s
With one shot left for USA, taken by Brandi Chastain; if she scores they win
Chastian wasnt even in the top 5 to take p.k.s, she had just recently missed a
p.k. against China a couple months ago.
Coach DiCicco told her she had to take it left footed
WHAT WAS THE OUTCOME?
Women's professional soccer
The United States first women's professional league was established after the
completion of the 1999 World Cup.
It only lasted till 2003.
Another league formed called Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) in 2009
It folded in 2012
In 2013 the National Women's Soccer League was established and is currently still
going on
Increase in youth soccer
There was a significant increase in youth soccer in both girls and boys
WHAT DIDNT CHANGE?
The portrayal of womens sports in media
Still not represented as athletic or strong
The success of USWNT
USA is number 1 in the world right now, yet they are not getting the money or
attention that they deserve
