Good Evening All!!!!! I am Chiqueta (Keta) Harris, your presenter over the next three (3) weeks; a recent graduate of

Kaplan Universitys B.S. program in Health and Wellness; and a Community Health Outreach Specialist, where I increase

awareness on the importance of quality health & wellness in the community. Thank you for joining me this evening as we

explore the exciting world of Holistic Medicine. Tonight we will cover part 1 of 3 sessions on Holistic Medicine for

Obesity and Tobacco Prevention. The following handout lists our agenda for the evening, and all information has been

placed before you. This is a hands-on course, where all questions and accepted and encouraged. I will try my best to aid

you in any way, and hopefully our special guests may be able to answer any other questions. To get us started, we will

have everyone introduce themselves, and then complete the questionnaire on the following page.

the skin with thin needles. Chronic pain & depression
Aromatherapy Uses essential oils (concentrated extracts from the roots, leaves, seeds or
blossoms of plants) to promote healing (by mouth, topically or inhaled). Reduces pain,
depression and anxiety; and treats inflammation or infections.
Ayurvedic medicine Originated in India; herbs, massage, and special diets are used with
the intent of balancing mind, body, spirit. Promotes overall wellness
Balneotherapy (hydrotherapy) Dates back to 1700 B.C.E. and uses water for therapeutic
purposes. Treats acne, pain, swelling & anxiety (Newcomer, 2014).

Biofeedback Relaxation techniques and mental exercises are learned to better control
involuntary bodily processes to improve disease process; and electrodes are attached to
measure bodily states. Increases relaxation & decreases stressors
Chiropractic Focuses on musculoskeletal and nervous system disorders, with the most
common procedure being spinal manipulation (adjustment). Decreases pain & improves
physical functioning
Homeopathy Extensive background information is gathered, and then a highly diluted
substance is prescribed works similar to a vaccine. Jumpstarts the bodys natural systems
of healing (Newcomer, 2014).
Meditation A mind-body practice helping to balance physical, mental and emotional states;
enhances spiritual growth; and promotes wellness. Relieves stress & promotes relaxation
(Jain, 2017).

Naturopathy Based on the premise of the healing power of nature; and explores the
patients mental, physical and spiritual manifestations. Improves low back pain, more
research being conducted
Reflexology Applying pressure to specific areas of the feet, hands, or ears. These points
correspond to healing certain organs. Improves respiratory function in breast cancer and
asthmatics & reduces fatigue and insomnia
Reiki Based on a life energy force flowing through everyone when low, energy can be
transferred to the client by the practitioner results of efficacy varies. Promotes relaxation,
general well-being & speed healing; reduces pain (Newcomer, 2014).
Yoga - A mind-practice practice over 5000 years old, consisting of various postures and
breathing exercises; pre-natal also available; and is effective in treating alcohol addiction
and smoking. Improves flexibility and promotes relaxation (Jain, 2017).

Good Evening all!!!!! Thank you for joining me this evening for Session 2 of 3. I am

Chiqueta (Keta) Harris, your instructor for the remaining two (2) weeks. Last week we

discussed holistic medicine and its principles, along with complementary and alternative

medicine (CAM) modalities. Our agenda for this evening is on the previous page; this weeks

lesson will be on CAM modalities for preventing obesity. We will start today by asking if

anyone has any questions pertaining to last weeks session.

COSTS
Obesity, one of the biggest drivers of preventable chronic diseases & healthcare cost in
America, results in the following:
Estimate currently ranging from $147 billion, to nearly $210 billion annually
Job absenteeism costing approximately $4.3 billion annually
Lower productivity while at work costing employers $506 per obese worker annually
(Trust for Americas Health and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2016, para. 1).

There are various CAM modalities for


obesity, but a few options can include:
Acupuncture (Ismail et al., 2015).
Yoga (McMullen, 2013).
Aromatherapy (Naeem, 2012).
Hydrotherapy (Priya, 2016).
HERBAL (AYURVEDIC)
MEDICINES
FOR OBESITY
Triphala One of the richest sources of vitamin C and calcium, providing nourishment to the whole body and
eliminating toxins. Aids in clearing excess fats from the body & is an important herbal mixture for weight loss.
Vrikshamla Blocks the citrate lyase, an enzyme assisting the body in the formation of fat and in turn, prevents
accumulation of fat in the body. Lowers the level of cholesterol in the body, helping in weight loss.
Chitrak Digestive & flatulence relieving herb popularly used to improve digestion, treat bloating & intestinal worms,
and helps balance Vata and Kapha dosha. Stimulates digestive fire to improve metabolism, which helps in maintaining
a healthy weight.
Agnimantha Diuretic herb promoting weight loss by increasing the frequency & output of urination, and helps balance
Vata and Kapha dosha. Promotes weight loss, and is beneficial in constipation, bloating, altered digestion, and
metabolism (Chauhan, 2015).
Ashok Alleviates kapha dosha, which is responsible for obesity. Also beneficial for treating dysentery, piles &
menstrual disorders.

Mustak A weed widely used to treat obesity. This herb aids in unblocking obstruction of channels and
indigestion by removing extra fat from body tissues. Also, widely used in treating fever.
Guggul Contains guggulsterone which helps in lowering cholesterol levels in the body & stimulates thyroid
functions to maintain healthy metabolic rates. Fastens the process of weight loss.
Kalmegh An extremely bitter herb helping the body get rid of extra fat and toxins. Also has blood purifying
properties.
Aloe Vera Increases fat absorption, leading to better energy consumption. Excellent at removing toxins from
the body.
Katuki Used to elevate metabolism in the body, aiding in weight loss. Also improves digestion (Chauhan,
2015).

Several techniques for coping with stress includes:
Separating yourself from self-destructive & self-soothing thought processes, or critical inner
voices
Recognizing negative traits in your parents and how you manifest these behaviors in your
own life
Relinquishing self-soothing behavior patterns (i.e., addictive behaviors and self-
protective, inward approaches to life)
Developing your own moral compass by pursing the activities and people who make
your life meaningful (Firestone, 2012).

Benefits of quitting/reducing your smoking consumption may include:
Blood pressure goes down; pulse rate slows; temperature of hands/feet increases 20 minutes
Carbon monoxide & oxygen levels in bloodstream return to normal 8 hours
Chance of heart attack decreases as system repairs itself 24 hours
Nerve ending deadened by smoking begin to regenerate; sense of taste & smell improves 48 hours
Circulation improves; lungs function better; walking & exercise much easier several weeks
Phlegm production decreases and less coughing or wheezing first few months
Cutting cardiovascular risks 1 year
Reduction in stroke risks 5 years
Reduction in cancer risks 10 years
