Researched physiology of digestion
Discovered salvation occurred as a response to a stimulus.
Research lead to the classical conditioning learning theory.
Awarded Nobel Prize in 1904 for his research.

Research Findings
Believed salvation was a natural response.
Measured the amount of salvia produced when presented a bowl
of food.
Noticed increased salvation anytime assistant entered the room
with or without food
Proved dogs learned to associate assistant with food causing
salivation
Began a new study.
Rang a bell every time dogs were fed.
Then rang the bell without food and noted increased salvation.
(McLeod, 2013)
Important lesson from experiments
Law of temporal contiguity
If too much time has past between stimuli then learning
will not take place.
Why is this important?

Behaviorism
Pavlovs research is one of the best known examples of behaviorism.
According to Knowles behaviorism is a learning theory which states that
learning is the result of conditioning.
Behaviors are learned through
Stimulation
Positive reinforcement
Behaviors are not a result of uncontrollable reactions.
Findings were used by Watson in 1913 to create the classical conditioning
theory.
(Knowles, 2015)
Other notable discoveries
Pavlovs findings included:
Reinforcement
Generalization
Differentiation
Extinction

Classical Conditioning
Classical conditioning consists of three stages:
before conditioning
during conditioning
after conditioning.
