using examples. 2. What do you think could possibly threaten biodiversity? Why? Movie Notes Directions: 1. Take notes on the movie. Be prepared to turn in your notes at the end of the period. 2. Questions you should be able to answer after the movie: a. How has biodiversity benefitted humans? b. What factors affect the carrying capacity of populations within specific ecosystems? c. What are common threats to the remaining natural ecosystems and biodiversity? d. How do you think these threats can be reduced? Handout Directions: 1. Answer the questions on your handout. 2. Be prepared to turn in your handout with your notes stapled to it by the end of the period. Warm-up (4/19/2017) 1. Explain carrying capacity and factors that can affect it. 2. Describe how biodiversity is maintained within ecosystems. (Hint* predator/prey, keystone) Directions: 1. Smush your desk together. 2. Use a chromebook to research the 7 questions. 3. Answer the research questions with your partner on the handout. 4. Be prepared to turn in ONE handout per pair at the end of the period. Unit 6: Lecture 1: Biodiversity The Value of Biodiversity Biodiversity: Total amount of all genetically based variety of all organisms on Earth. The Value of Biodiversity 1. Ecosystem diversity- habitats, communities, and ecological processes in the living world. The Value of Biodiversity 2. Species diversity- number of different species in the biosphere. The Value of Biodiversity 3. Genetic diversity- all the different forms of genetic information carried by all organisms living on Earth today. Why is biodiversity important to humans? Threats to Biodiversity Human activity can reduce biodiversity in 4 main way: 1. Altering Habitats 2. Hunting Species to Extinction 3. Introducing Toxic Compounds into Food Webs 4. Introducing Foreign Species to New Environments (Invasive Species) Threats to Biodiversity 1. Habitat Alteration- land development often splits ecosystems into pieces a. Natural habitats are destroyed. b. The smaller a species habitat is, the more vulnerable the species is to further disturbance. Threats to Biodiversity 2. Demand for Wildlife Products- humans have hunted organisms for food or other products extinction Threats to Biodiversity Introducing toxic compounds into food webs results in biomagnification. a. Biomagnification-the process by which a compound (such as a pollutant or pesticide) increases its concentration in the tissues of organisms as it travels up the food chain. Threats to Biodiversity 4. Invasive Species- reproduce rapidly because their new habitat lacks the predators that would usually control their population. Results of these threats 1. Endangered species- a species whose population size is declining in a way that places it in danger of extinction. 2. Extinction- occurs when a species disappears from all of range. Going Further Directions: 1. Use pages 98-105 in your textbook to determine the ten major terrestrial Biomes. 2. Create a pamphlet for the ten major biomes listed in your textbook.
The chart/Slides must include the following information:
Name of biome Temperature and precipitation Location of the biome on the globe 2 types of common plants 2 types of common animals 2 or more specific resources that we use that can be found in that Biome 2 threats to the biome Current solutions to the threats described. Warm Up (4/21/2017) 1. Describe the different threats to biodiversity.
2. In your description state what biodiversity is
and specifically how it is threatened using examples. Presenters: Biome Presentations You will be assigned 2 Biomes to Present of my choosing on the fly (on the moment of being picked to present)(so be prepared and know all the Biomes). You must describe the biome: a) Location on the planet b) Average temp. and precipitation c) Flora/Fauna examples d) Resources used that are found in the Biome e) Major threats f) solutions to threats
Audience: Listen and take notes on the above objectives.
Ask questions to help make sure they meet all the objectives.
