USAGE OF STEAM
Heating Loads

Process or open steam loads

Power Loads
USAGE OF STEAM: HEATING LOADS

Usually well defined

Heat exchangers, reboilers, steam tracings,

and off-site and utility plant heating
USAGE OF STEAM: OPEN STEAM LOADS

Include fractionators, stripping steam, vacuum jet

ejectors, spargers, smokeless flares, fuel atomizing
steam
USAGE OF STEAM: POWER LOADS

Represented by turbine drivers on pumps, compressors,

generators
STEAM GENERATION AND DISTRIBUTION

fired steam or unfired steam generators,

sources turbine exhaust or extraction

different pressure levels for process and

utility requirements
REFINERY STEAM SYSTEM
FOUR TYPES OF HEADERS
some process units have waste heat boilers
900 psig consumed by steam turbines to drive recycle compressors, charge pumps

sources are the exhaust steam and turbines

475 psig consumed by steam turbines, reboilers, and certain process plants

sources are steam turbine exhaust, waste heat boilers in the process units
150 psig consumed by process stripping, reboilers, and steam tracing

consumed for process steam stripping, reboilers, and steam tracing

50 psig excess is condensed and returned to the reboiler feedwater
NORMAL AND PEAK STEAM DEMAND
Normal steam demand - can be estimated by adding together the demand of the
individual process units of the refinery
major equipment, waste heat boilers
exhaust steam demand -for heating the building and off-site areas; and for atomizing fuel and
for deaerators

Peak demand -occurs during power failure

maximum boiler steam requirement (a turnaround in which a major waste heat steam
generator is down).
BOILER CAPACITY

Thermal Power Plant- 8 steam boilers

(450 tons/hr)

Refinery Solid Fuel-Fired Boiler (RSFFB) - 4 steam boiler

(800 tons/hr)
