DICT. Network Topology
The Department of Information and Communications Technology
(DICT) is the executive department of the Philippine government
responsible for the planning, development and promotion of the
country's information and communications technology (ICT) agenda in
support of national development.
Network Topology
The network topology refers to the topological structure of a
network and may be depicted physically or logically. The illustration
above is an example of the physical topology of the Department of
Information and Communications Technology.
However, the type of topology that certain networks, like that of the
DICT will depend on the area coverage and layout/structure of the buildings
in the said compound.
In the case of the DICT, based on the map shown, the type of
topology that seems appropriate to use is the Hybrid. This Hybrid class of
topology is a combined connection of the star topology and the bus
topology. Remember that in the star topology each device has a dedicated
point-to-point link only to a central controller. The bus topology on the
other hand is multipoint where a cable usually acts as a backbone to link all
the devices in a network.
With the matter said, a star topology was used in the Toll Office
for the distribution of the internet connection from the server to the
main office at the toll building and the hub (located at the same
building) that will be used for the other offices. Another Star topology is
utilized in these hubs. First, is for the toll office itself and the other is for
distribution purposes to the offices seen in the map. At this point, bus
topology is used (due to its multipoint property) to link all other hubs
distributed to each building and Star topology was again used for the
distribution of the internet connection in each building. Moreover, some
devices connect wirelessly through routers.
