Description
Bukagan Hill is a 15 minutes ride from the Ozamiz
City. It is composed of different species of flora and
fauna. Some are endangered species like Tugas tree
(Scientific Name) and Baliti tree (Scientific Name). A
lot of medicinal plants were found like wild malinaw
(Scientific Name), Kanding-kanding (Scientific Name),
Hambubukad (Scientific Name) and Handiamay
(Scientific Name). The most ominant is the buri o buli
(Scientific Name). For the fauna; Banog or Philippine
eagle (Scientific Name), Takray (Scientific Name),
Alansiyang (Scientific Name), Alimukon (Scientific
Name), Saguksok (Scientific Name), Antulihaw
(Scientific Name).

It is a sloppy hill made up of different rock
formation. It is also a volcanic stones that
were dislocated.

It was believed that long time ago, there was a


diwata who lived in a cave who used to lend
some of her things to the people like plates and
dress for wedding, and kitchen utensils and
should be returned complete and no damage. It
was said that when you borrow you need to make
some rituals. But, some borrowers did not abide
the agreement that results to the abuse of her
things. Therefore, she got angry and wishes to
close the cave with a big stone and never been
seen.

This place also used for penitential rites during


holy week, where almost thousand of people
joined the rites. In this hill, we can see the bell
used by the guerillas as signals when there are
colonizers.
Significance
Historical in a sinse that the hill was used as
home/hide-outs of the Gerillas and American soldiers
as evident is the presence of the bell tower which is
composed of 4 great bells namely: St. Peter, St. Marien,
St. Joseph and St. Michael which was purchased by
Bishop Patrick Cronin, D.D.. It was inaugurated July 16,
1948. it rung to mark the start of their being a symbol
of peace and friendship between the Muslims and the
Christians, the purpose for which Mayer Fernando T.
Bernad conceived the idea of putting the bells on the

Aesthetic- When you reach the top of the hill,
you can see the beauty of whole Ozamiz and
Pangui Bay. It was also planned as tourist spot.
Spiritual in a since that it is used for the
penitential rites of the 14 station of the cross
during the holy week. Every holy Friday, they
conducted mass at the top of the hill.

Socio-Economic in a since that the place used
for businesses like putting up towers of Globe,
Smart, Sun, GMA, NGCP, DOTC and Water
Reservoir was built for easy distribution of
water.

Reforestation by the Civic Organization
Since, it is owned by the private individuals there is no
ordinances made to protect and preserve the hill.
CONSTRAINTS/THREATS/ISSUES
Garbage were evident along the way
Soil Erosion was observed due to construction of the
road
Hazing Fraternities and Riots were evident because the
place is far from city and few houses were built.

CONSERVATION MEASURES:
At present, because of the conflicts of the
owners and the government, No Conservation
Measure is made. We suggests that the
conflict should be settled and ordinances
should be made to protect and preserve the
hill.
