MEAN
(for grouped data)

Grouped data are the data or scores

that are arranged in a frequency
distribution.
Frequency is the number of observations
falling in a category.
Frequency distribution is the
arrangement of scores according to
category of classes including the
frequency.
MEAN
(for grouped data)
The only one formula in solving the mean
for grouped data is called midpoint method.
The formula is:

=

Where :
= mean value
= midpoint of each class or category
= frequency in each class or category
= summation of the product of
MEAN
(for grouped data)
Steps in Solving Mean for Grouped Data
1. Find the midpoint or class mark ( )of each class
or category using the formula
+
=
2
2. Multiply the frequency and the corresponding class
mark .
3. Find the sum of the results in step 2.
4. Solve the mean using the formula.

MEDIAN
(for grouped data)

where:
L is the lower class boundary of the group
containing the median
n is the total number of values
B is the cumulative frequency of the
groups before the median group
G is the frequency of the median group
w is the group width
MODE
(for grouped data)
Mode is the value that has the highest
frequency in a data set.
For grouped data, class mode (or, modal
class) is the class with the highest frequency.
To find mode for grouped data, use the
following formula:
MODE
(for grouped data)

where:
L is the lower class boundary of the
modal group
fm-1 is the frequency of the group
before the modal group
fm is the frequency of the modal group
fm+1 is the frequency of the group after
the modal group
w is the group width
Sample Problem

Class Interval 140h<150 150h<160 160h<170 170h<180

Frequency 6 16 21 8

The table above gives data on the

heights, in cm, of 51 children.
1. Estimate the mean height.
To estimate the mean, the mid-point of each interval
should be used.
Class Interval Mid-point Frequency Mid x Freq
140h<150 145 6 870
150h<160 155 16 2480
160h<170 165 21 3465
170h<180 175 8 1400
TOTAL 51 8215

Mean = 8215 / 51=161

2. Find the median class.
The median is the 26th value. In this
case it lies in the 160 h < 170 class
interval. Note that you can estimate the
median height.
The 4th value in the interval is
needed. It is estimated as
160 + (4/21) 10 = 162
(to the nearest cm)
3. Find the modal class.
The modal class is 160 h < 170 as it
contains the most values.
