Transformations Project

By: Gabriela Morales.

Third Grade TEKS
Geometry and measurement. The student applies
mathematical process standards to analyze attributes of two-
dimensional shapes and three-dimensional solids to develop
generalizations about their properties. The student is expected
to:
Classify and sort three-dimensional solids, including
spheres, cones, cylinders, rectangular prisms (including cubes
as special rectangular prisms), and triangular prisms, based on
attributes using formal geometric language.
Transformation:
A general term for four specific ways to manipulate
the shape of a point, a line, or shape. The original shape of the
object is called the pre-image and the final shape and position
of the object is the image under the transformation.
Some transformation examples include Reflection,
Translation and Rotation.
The following links could be helpful to practice
some figure transformations.

translation

Translation:
A function from the plane to the plane such that the
image of the point with coordinates (X,Y) is (X+A) (Y+B) where
A and B are real numbers.

In other words: Moving the figure depending upon the

coordinate points.
Translation example, where each point is moved
2 units to the right (X+2) and 3 units down (Y-3)

rotations-and-translations
Reflection:
A transformation from a plane to a plane that pairs each
point P with a point P1 in such a way that line L is
perpendicular bisector of line PP1 as long as P is not on line L

In other words: Flipping the figure over the axis.

Reflection examples of figures being flipped over the axis:

ation.html
Rotation
A circular movement. It has a central point that stays fixed and
everything else moves around the origin point (0,0). A
"Full Rotation" is 360
A rotation example is when a figure is moved
around the origin (0,0)
