Deforestation is causing widespread environmental problems like loss of habitats, erosion, landslides, and climate change. It is responsible for 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions and threatens millions of species. While the Philippine government has established programs like Arbor Day to address deforestation, citizen action is also needed. Individuals can help by planting trees, reducing paper usage, buying organic products, and encouraging sustainable living.

Bolo, James Ivan Comia, Ria Kathleen Nobleza, Jamyll Shealtiel Ocampo, Christianneil Emmanuel Tadaya, Jasiel Micah the clearing of Earth's forests on a massive scale. This often results in damage to the quality of the land. Forests still cover about 30 percent of the worlds land area. The worlds rainforests could completely vanish in a hundred years at the current rate of deforestation. Agriculture is the biggest driver of deforestation. To gain space for crops, livestock grazing, and planting, farmers cut down trees on lands. Often, a process called slash and burn agriculture is used by small farmers where in they clear a few acres by cutting down trees and burning them. Countless trees each year are cut because of logging operations. These logging operations provide paper products and the worlds woods but are sometimes being done the wrong way. Some loggers act illegally which bring about irrational use of our forest. As most of us know, loggers also build roads to access more and more remote forests which leads to further deforestation but it doesnt end there. Forests are also cut as a result of growing urban sprawl as land is developed for dwellings. Not all deforestation is intentional, though. Some is caused by a combination of human and natural factors like wildfires and subsequent overgrazing, which may prevent the growth of young trees. LOSS OF HABITAT Deforestation can have a negative impact on the environment if done excessively and irresponsibly. One of the biggest concerns or problem deforestation brings is loss of habitat for millions of species. A large fraction of Earths land animals and plants live in forest and many cant survive the deforestation that destroy their homes. EROSION The loss of trees, which anchor the soil with their roots, causes widespread erosion throughout the tropics. Only a minority of areas have good soils, which after clearing are quickly washed away by the heavy rains. Thus crop yields decline and the people must spend income to import foreign fertilizers or clear additional forest. After heavy tropical rains fall on cleared forest lands, the run-off carries soil into local creeks and rivers. The rivers carry the eroded soils downstream, causing significant problems. LANDSLIDE deforestation can also cause natural disasters like landslides. This is due to the fact that there is no forest trees left to hold the soil after deforestation. As a result, shear strength decreases and landslides are more prone to occur. The root cause of the landslide is mainly due to the levelling of land on the hill for cultivation and uprooting of trees. With heavier rain, shear stress on the soil particles can increase so more landslide can occur. CLIMATE CHANGE Other than that, deforestation also drives climate change. Without the protection from sun-blocking tree cover, the moist forest soil will quickly dry out. Trees also help perpetuate the water cycle, returning water vapor to the atmosphere. Many former forest lands can quickly become barren deserts without trees to fill these roles. GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the 33 million acres of forestland that are lost annually around the globe are responsible for 20% of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. GLOBAL WARMING With fewer forests, larger amounts of greenhouse gases will enter the atmosphere and increase speed and severity of global warming. OBLITERATION OF EARTHS CANOPY Portions of the Earths canopy will be obliterated. Canopies block the suns rays during the day, and holds in heat at night. This can be harmful to animals and plants because some cant take certain conditions or temperatures and with this disruption, temperature swings will be more extreme. Philippines ranked 4th in the worlds top 10 most threatened forest hotspots. Between 1990 and 2000, Philippines lost an average of 262,500 hectares of forest per year. Average annual deforestation rate: 2.48% Between 2000 and 2005, the rate of forest change decreased by 20.2% to 1.98% per annum. In total, between 1990 and 2005, Philippines lost 32.3% of its forest cover, or around 3,412,000 hectares. Proclamation No. 643 Amending Proclamation no. 396 dated June 2, 2003, entitled "Enjoining the active participation of all government agencies, including government-owned and controlled corporations, private sector, schools, civil society groups and the citizenry in tree planting activity and declaring June 25, 2003 as Philippines Arbor day" ARBOR DAY Since 1947, Arbor Day in the Philippines has been institutionalized to be observed throughout the nation by planting trees and ornamental plants and other forms of relevant activities. Start planting trees. Go paperless. Recycle as much as possible. Buy organic products. Encourage people to live in a way that doesnt hurt environment. SUMMARY: Deforestation is a problem that can affect our world widely, threatening the population of organisms, bringing about climate change, and giving way for pollution to grow. This is why we have to act and do our best for the stated problem. The government has tried and is still trying to act upon the problem but by seeing the effects that it brought, we can conclude that it will not be enough. Thats why we citizens should also move to solve this and try our best to help. We can do this by starting to plant trees, going paperless, and recycling as much as possible. We could also help by buying organic products, and encouraging people to live in a way that doesnt hurt environment. Thank you for listening and #PlantATree
