Stand UP
Stand up if the following statements apply to you.
Sit down if they dont!
Today you will...
...relate quality of life to both genetics and diet.
...discuss two major nutrition related diseases and their
causes.
...come up with two ways you can positively influence your
quality of life with nutrition!
GLOSSARY
We have included a glossary on our handout.
If you have any questions feel free to ask!
1.
Nutrition & Genetics
How does this impact the quality of life?
What is genetics?
How does it work?
Genetics is a large storage of information in each of you cells that tells your
body what to do, put simply genetics is a recipe for you.
When you first grew, your genetic code is what made you look like what you
are.
Your genetics are made up of DNA which is in all of our cells and it looks like
this.
How do our jeans genes
impact quality of life?

Genetics have a lot to do with how we act. Genetics can determine a lot of
things such as:
Hair color How fast your metabolism is?
Eye color How hungry you get?
Height How easy it is for you to exercise?
Skin color and How long will you live?
As you can see there are a lot of things that can affect your quality of life in
complexion How susceptible are you to disease?
many ways.
How do our genes make us
more susceptible to disease?
Some diseases are genetic, which means they can be carried in your genes and you
can pass them down to your children.
An easy example would be sickle-cell anaemia. Sickle-cell anaemia results from a
faulty gene that creates red blood cells, if you have this disease you can pass it on.

Not all diseases are as easy as you either inherit it or you dont, a lot of diseases
having family history of it just means you are a little more likely to get it yourself.
You cant control your genetics but you CAN control what you do with them.
What is nutrition?
How does it impact our quality of life?
Genetics is only half the equation!

A lot of what determines your health and quality of life is environmental

factors or put simply how you choose to lead your life.

One big environmental or controllable factor is your diet.

What types of food do you consider a healthy part or

unhealthy part of a diet?

Does eating a better diet improve quality of life?

Activity
In a group,
List one thing that might affect quality of life and...
What are some of the causes of this? Are their genetic or hereditary
causes? Are their environmental or controllable causes? Both?

If there is a dietary cause, what could someone do about it?

2.
Nutrition & Disease
How does what you eat impact your health?
Disease and
Nutrition

Some diseases are linked to nutrition.

How do genetics play a role in these?
Genetics determine how susceptible a person is to
develop a disease.
Environmental factors (diet) determine which
susceptible people will actually develop the
disease.
Type II Diabetes
What causes it?
Body does not use insulin properly.
Pancreas makes extra insulin to try to make up for it.
Over time, pancreas is not able to keep up and insulin
production slows.
Glucose levels build up in blood and does not go to cells.
Cells are starved of energy
Can damage eyes, kidneys, and nerves
Risk Factors: African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans,
increased risk with age, poor dietary habits
Type II Diabetes and
Nutrition
Nutrition to prevent:
Whole grains
Fiber from fruits and vegetables
Variety
Avoid added sugar
Sodas, candy
Less salt
Processed food, salt shaker
What are some practical tips you can that can help prevent it.
Physical Activity
Healthy Diet
Smaller, spaced out meals
Cardiovascular Disease
What causes it?

Overview of disease: A large umbrella for other

disorders that affect the function of the heart.
Risk Factors: family history, age, ethnicity, tobacco,
high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, physical
inactivity, diabetes, unhealthy diet.
Cardiovascular Disease and
Nutrition

How does nutrition prevent CVD

Fresh fruit and vegetables
Decrease processed foods and extra salt
Food low in saturated fat
High fiber
Decrease added sugars.
What are some practical tips you can that can help
prevent it.
Healthy eating
Physical activity
Decrease stress

Content that can be used for the handout:

1. Genetics and Environmental Factors have a huge impact on your health now and in the future. While you
cant change your genes, you have control on other factors. These factors are your diet and physical
activity.
a. So, what can you do now?
b. Live a healthy lifestyle with physical activity, a variety of food, and social interaction. It is
recommended to increase fruit, vegetables, and fish into your diet, adjust the types of fats
consumed, and control the amount of sugar in your diet.
