June 5th

World Environment
Day
Colegio Altamira
History
In 1972, the United Nations
General Assembly approved the
formation of the United Nations
Environment Program. This led
to June 5th of every year being
recognized as World
Environment Day.
The purpose of World Environment Day
Create a change in attitude
towards our responsability
with the environment.
Why is it important to care for the
environment?
Water that we drink comes
from rivers and underground
wter.
Trees provide us with oxigen,
maintain humidity and
provide shelter and food for
many organisms.
We have chosen to make money instead of
taking care of our future on Earth.
Are you sure
this is only a
cartoon?
This is happening in our world today.
To protect the environment we have to do many
things but if we do not start now, we will die with
it.
At Colegio Altamira we care about our
environment!
What are we going to do about it?
We are going green!
Students from the upper grades
have prepared pallets where we will
make a vertical vegetable garden.
Why are we doing this?
All plants provide oxygen.
It is a smart way to use less space and
resources to produce more food for our
community.
On Monday, June 5th.
Mrs. Ana Luca Ruano, who has lots of
experience in this type of garden, will
come to help us plant our garden. She
will be giving us instructions on how to
prepare our pallets and plant our seeds.
We will be making 6 teams that will
include students from different grades.
Each team will be given a pallet to work
on.
You need to bring something to protect
your clothes, like a big old shirt and
gardening equipment you might already
have.
How to plant our garden
Step 1: Clean the area where
you will be working.
Step 2: Take the pomez rock
mixture and place it in the
planter box.
Step 3: Add the sand over the
rock mixture.
Step 4: Add the soil over the
sand.
Step 5: Create the space to put in the
seed.

Step 6: Place the seed in the space

provided and cover it with a small
amount of soil.

Step 7: Water the area. Do not put

too much water, just make it moist.

Step 8: Place the identification plate

so we know what type of seed was
planted there.
