TRANSFORMER
DRYING
PROCESS
(IN FIELD)
INSULATION MATERIAL
Paper, Pre-compressed Board & Oil is used as
Insulation Material in Transformer.
Insulation Paper & PCB contains about 3%
Moisture by Weight for live Transformers in
Field
It is desired & aimed at to reduce moisture
level to less than 1% in the system to
minimise influence of moisture on aging.
EFFECT OF MOISTURE IN SOLID
INSULATION

Reduction in Electrical Strength.

Accelerated Aging.
Sludge formation on conductor affecting
heat transfer resulting into rise in temp.
TRANSFORMER IN THE FIELD

Moisture gets generated in Transformer solid

Insulation while on load & is to be extracted on
regular basis to increase its life.
DRYING PROCESS
CONTROLING PARAMETERS
Internal Insulation Temperature &
Temperature Distribution.
Partial Water Vapour Distribution Between
Inner Insln. Layers & Surrounding Medium.
Diffusion Co-efficient of the Insln. Material.

Drying Time.
TEMPERATURE
Higher Temperature Desirable.
Even & Uniform Temp. Distribution
Desirable.
PARTIAL WATER VAPOUR
PRESSURE DIFFERENCE
By reducing pressure of surrounding.
By higher Internal Partial Water Vapour
Pressure by increasing Temp. of Insln.
20deg C Temp. rise doubles internal water
vapour pressure.
CO-EFFICIENT OF DIFFUSION
1.The Diffusion Co-efficient of oil impregnated
material is 1/20th to 1/30th of that of oil free
material.
2.A 20 deg C temp. rise increases the diffusion
co-efficient by roughly 100 % and hence reduces
drying time by half.
3. Type of Material to be dried (capillary cross
section & length)
4. Pressure difference over path of diffusion.
5. Moisture Content of Mtl.
DRYING TIME

Material to be Dried.
Final Required Drying Quality.

Type of Drying Process.

Weight of Insulation

Thickness of Material
DESIRABLE
Max. Moisture extraction at minimum
temperature.
Minimum residual moisture at the start of
Vacuum stage ensuring minimum Insln.
Temp drop.
Insln temp to be as high as possible and as
uniform at the end of drying process.
TYPES OF DRYING PROCESSES
(SITE DRYING)
1. Hot Oil Circulation & Vacuum.
2. Dry Air purging & Vacuum.
3. Hot Oil Spray Drying & Vacuum.
4. Low Frequency Heating & Vacuum.
5. Mobile Vapour Phase Drying.
VAPOUR PHASE DRYING
Higher Temp. as Total Process Under Vacuum.
Fast & Uniform Heating of Material.

Little Depolymerisation, as Water Extraction

Starts at relatively Low Temperatures.
Cleaning Effect.

Impregnated Transformers can be Dried.
