Introduction of pumps

Various pumps which are used in cement plant to handle

*Water
*Oil
*Grease
*Slurry
*Powder Material

These pumps are used to establish flow of these materials and are very
essential in the operation of cement plant.
In Cement plant Pumps are Classified as

A. Hydro-Dynamic (Non positive Displacement type)

B. Hydro-Static (positive Displacement type )

A. Hydro-Dynamic (Non positive Displacement type)

Hydro-Dynamic or Non Positive displacement pumps such as centrifugal

or turbine designs are used primarily in the transfer of fluid where the only

resistance encountered is that caused by the weight of the fluid it self and

friction .

Most Non Positive displacement pumps operates by centrifugal force, they

provide smooth continuous flow, there out-put is reduced as resistance is

increased . It is possible to completely block off the out-let while the pump is

running.
B. Hydro-Static (positive Displacement type )

Hydro-Static or positive Displacement pumps , it discharges the given

amount of fluid for every stroke, revolution or cycle .

There out-put except for leakage losses is independent of out-let

pressure ,

making them well suited for use in the transmission of power.

Classification of Pumps Based On Operating Principle

Pumps are classified based on

Operating principle

Pumping action upon liquid

Motion of Working members

Shape of Working members

As example

A Centrifugal pump works by the principle of centrifugal force acted on

the media being handled. They can be single suction , double suction ,
single state , multi stage ect.
Classification of Pumps Based On Operating Principle

In An Axial flow pumps , the flow of liquid shall be parallel to the axes of
rotation ; Whereas The mixed flow pumps , be flow shall be directed in an
inclined fashion by inclined axes of impeller blade setting.

In An Air lift pump , the Medium is raised through a pipe by admitting

compressed air.

The Diaphragm and hose type pumps employ flexible (rubber) elements
which are very useful when pumping liquids With sand or
cements / limestone solutions.

In Pneumatic pumps, liquid is expelled from the chamber by application of

compressed air.

Working member of a guided vane pump is a cylindrical drum with slots

receiving sliding vane within the eccentric casing . This forms a variable
displacement chamber during the rotation of the drum
Classification of Pumps By Properties of Fluid
More viscous liquid are handled by positive displacement and vane pumps from
consideration of wear on the machine parts in friction ,mixture of ash or soil and
water are delivered usually by dynamic pumps. E ach type of pumps is
appropriate for specific discharge and pressure levels. Reciprocating and rotary
pumps are used where high pressure and small capacity are required.
Graph show HEAD Vs CAPACITY for different types of water pumps .
This is due to their ability to provide for small discharge even at very high
pressure. Axial flow pumps are used to deliver large quantities of liquid at low
pressure.
