APPLICATIONS:
In 2011 Cree Inc. and GE developed a
SiC-MOSFET transformer that can realize
values from 13.8KV to 4653V at 97%
efficiency with a 25% reduction in weight
and 30% reduction in volume as
compared to a similar conventional 60 Hz
transformer.

In 2013, ABBs first delivery of the DC grid was to Dina
Star A 93 meter long and 5000 Dead Weight Tonnage
multipurpose offshore supply and construction vessel
operated by Myklebusthaug Offshore, Kleven Shipyard,
Norway.

Grid.

I. Up to 27% specific fuel saving if taking full advantage of all features

including energy storage and variable speed engines.
II. Reduced footprint and weight of electrical equipment by up to 30%.

ADVANTAGES:
Reactive power elimination.
Lower transmission losses.
Synchronization to the grid is not
necessary.
Better fault tolerance.
An option to store excessive power in
contrast to AC.
Simplified design as no conversion
necessary.

08/22/17 11
DISADVANTAGES:
DC grid requires constant communication
between all of its terminals.
Power flow needs to be actively regulated
by a control system which in contrast is
an inherent property of a transmission line
.
Due to lack of availability, SSTs of SiC-
MOSFET are much more expensive than
conventional transformers.
08/22/17 12
CONCLUSION
MVDC is truly the future and the next big
thing in the power distribution technology.
Technological developments on the
manufacturing of available materials for
the SST will grow in the near future. It
will soon break its barriers and make its
way to other propulsion systems such as
trains and so on.
