Emma Stark
Kyoto School Artist Unknown
Deer, Pine, and Bat
Description
What can you learn from the title of the
artwork?
Based on the title, I can tell there should be a deer, pine tree, and bat in the
painting.
Description
What subjects in the artwork can you recognize?
The subjects in the artwork I can recognize are, a deer, bat, and pine tree in a
forest scenery .
Description
Looking at the elements of design, describe
what qualities you see.
Looking at the elements of design, I see texture on the deer and background, I
see space in between the deer and tree. I see color in the background in
white, tan, and black. I also see, a line separating the deer and plant. This
shows value between the branch and deer, letting you know that the deer is
in front of the tree.
Description
What media and techniques did the artist use?
The artist used ink and water to portray the forest scenery.
Analysis
Emphasis: Is there a dominant element or focal
point that you see first?
The first thing I see in the painting is the deer. This is because the deer has
more negative space , as oppose to the tree; making it stand out.
Analysis
Balance: Is there a special balance, or weight,
among the elements? What mood does it
create? There is a special balance or weight among the elements. This
is because, on the left, we can see that the painting looks heavier, as it shows
a pine tree, bat, and larger tree trunk fading around the background.
Whereas, on the right we only see the deer standing against the branches of
the pine tree . I can conclude that, the painting on the right has a more
open negative space.
Analysis
Proportion: Do the proportions look normal,
ideal, or unusual? Why?
The proportions on this painting appear normal because, the deer, bat and
tree appear to all be the same size if they were to be combined together.
Analysis
Pattern: Are elements repeated to create a
pattern? Where? Why? The spots on the deer's body are
repeated to create a pattern. This is because, the artist wants to let those
who are looking at it know that the deer is standing outwards from the tree .
Analysis
Rhythm or Movement: What visual rhythms or
paths of movement do your eyes follow?
Where? Why? My eyes follow the pine tree which in turn,
connects to the larger tree trunk shown in the background. This
is because, the tree is connected to the background letting us
know that the scenery is in a forest.
Analysis
Unity and Variety: What elements bring
together, or unify many parts of the design.
Why? What elements add variety? Why? Some
elements that unify parts of the design are the
bat, which helps the painting to have negative
space.
Interpretation
Is there symbolism in the artwork? What do you
think it means? I think there is symbolism in this
artwork some of which includes the fact that the
scenery helps us to visualize a place in the forest
letting feel at peace .
Interpretation
What feeling do you think the artist wanted to
give the viewer when looking at the work? I
think the artist wanted to give the viewer a
feeling of serenity as if they are really looking in
the midst of a bat, deer, and pine tree.
Interpretation
Does the work remind you of other things you
have experienced? This artwork reminds me of
my grandparents backyard, which has a trail
covered in pine trees, deer roaming around
freely. This reminds me of the natural
background leaving me at peace when I look at
the painting.
