The Gate Valve

The Gate Valve is a general service valve

and used primarily for on-off, non-
throttling service
The valve is closed by flat-faced, vertical
disc, or gate that slides down through
the valve to block the flow
The gate valve is a linear motion valve
used to start or stop the fluid flow.
The name gate is derived from the
appearance of the disk in the flow
stream.

Face-to-Face dimensions:

Face-to-Face dim. acc. to EN558 , most common:

Short overall length ( DIN F4 = EN558-1,14 )

Long overall length ( DIN F5 = EN558-1,15 )

Further standards:

Long overall length ( DIN F7 = EN558-1,26 )

Long overall length ( DIN F1 = EN558-1,1 )
not acc. to any standard

Applications
Best Suited Control: Quick
Opening
Recommended Uses:
1. Fully open/closed, non-throttling
2. Infrequent operation
3. Minimal fluid trapping in line

Applications: Oil, gas, air, slurries, heavy

liquids, steam, non-condensing gases
and corrosive liquids.

31-08-17
Gate Valves

Advantages Disadvantages
1. High Capacity 1. Poor control
2. Tight shutoff 2. Cavitate at low
3. Low cost pressure drops
4. Little resistance 3. Cannot be used
to flow for throttling

Knife gate valves

When do we apply
knife gate
valves ?

??????????
31-08-17
Knife gate valves are applied
where most other valves fail.
Think of viscous media, powder,
slurry etc.

Operation

Before operating the valve:

Bear in mind: pressure and bore. At
large forces or loads the valve cannot be
operated.

Solution :

I am looking for a gate valve, suitable for water.

With PN 10 flanges, pipes are made of cast iron.

I need an ordinary cheap valve with short
overall length.

What are the possibilities ?

31-08-17
Fig. nr. 292 is the most logical
selection.
Page 107

Alternatives could be
fig.nr.317, 306 and fig.nr. 5416.
