North America can be broadly

divided into the six regions shown


on the map (right).
Greenland, Canada and most
of the United States lie in the
Northern hemisphere and have
four distinct seasons

Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and southern United States have more constant
temperatures throughout the year but have a wet season May to October and a dry
season November to April.
The climate of North America can be broadly divided into eight
different climate types:
Deciduous forest Four distinct seasons with warm summers and
cold, wet winters. The trees shed their leaves in autumn.
Coniferous forest
Also known as Taiga,
cold and dry with
snowy winters and
warmer summers.
Mediterranean
Warm to high
temperatures with
rainfall in the autumn
and winter months.
Grassland Hot summers and cold winters with above average
rainfall.
Tundra This area is characterised by a layer of permafrost (soil that
has remained below freezing for at least two years. Winters are very
cold, summers are warm and there is little rainfall.
Alpine/mountain Cold, windy and snowy. It is winter from October
to May with temperatures below freezing, while summer is from June
to September where the temperature can reach 15C.

The two warmest cities in North
America are Puntarenas in
Costa Rica and Acapulco in
Mexico, both with a yearly
average temperature of 27.9
C. The coldest city is Iqaluit
(Nunavut) in Canada, which
averages -9.8 C for the year.
The wettest city in North
America is Guapiles in Costa
Rica, which has on average
381.4 mm rainfall for the year.
The city with the least rainfall in
a year is Yuma in United States
of America in the state of
Arizona, which averages 6.7
mm of rain per year.
The warmest region in North
America is the state of Puerto
Rico in United States of
America, which averages 26.8
C for the year. The coldest
region is the state of Alaska in
United States of America, which
averages 1.4 C for the year.
The region in North America
with the highest average yearly
rainfall is the state of Alabama
in United States of America,
which averages 121.3 mm of
rainfall for the year. The driest
region is the state of Nevada in
United States of America, which
averages 12.3 mm of rainfall
for the year.
