A Substation ...
empowerment
of a country
ABB
To run a substation bears some risk for...
Industry
sensitive processes require uninterrupted power
Utilities
have to guarantee the delivery of power all the time
have contracts with the industry
ABB
A fault in a substation might cause ...
cascading trips
can be avoided by selective Tripping of a busbar
keep the power loss time short
selective fault isolation prevent extensive outages
ABB
Minimising impacts of black-outs
Example : Black-out in Brazil on March 11, 1999
no busbar- / breaker failure protection installed
CO
VE

UR
Tripped main transmission lines 4 x 400 kV
AR
Disruption duration 4h, 20 min.
Energy not served 24500 MWh
Inhabitants left in the dark 100 Mio
Overall loss 10 Mio $
Assumption:
ABB Switzerland Ltd. - 7
Selective tripping would have ensured that half of the power could still be

delivered.
Result:

Definition: numerical busbar protection
100% integrated functionality
100% settings / adjustments via SW
No external auxiliary relays to build logic's
No interposing current transformers necessary (ratio - adjustment via SW)
Decision based on numerical data
Input via A/D - converter & filter => SW - calculations
Two independent protection algorithm based on two different principles
Numerical signal processing
Optical fibres replace mostly copper cable => de-central arrangements
Additional functionality without any further hardware
Changes do not requires any external wiring changes => signal

Successful REB500 Trip in AIS Lskovec 220kV in CZ
On 6 December 2003, 10:18h the REB500
successfully and selectively tripped a phase to
ground fault at Liskovec 220kV substation.
During storm a station grounding wire was
broken and its one end fell down and hit busbar
W21 disconnector. in the measuring VT field and
caused phase L1 to ground fault. The REB 500
detected the busbar fault on W21 and selectively
tripped the entire busbar.
After a while the second part of the broken
grounding wire swung and hit an interconnection
bar between VT and disconnector at busbar
W11. The REB 500 detected and tripped
consecutive L1 to ground fault on W11.
The total clearance time for the first fault was
approx 50 ms (REB500 tripping time + circuit

REB500 numerical substation protection summary
Benefits of numerical technique and communication within substation protection
Improved functionality (optional functions On-line alarms and On-line event list
per bay) Ethernet connection (TCP/IP)
Less space required (NO auxiliary relays Connection to SCS/SMS (fault analysis)
for isolator image)
Disturbance record transfer
Easily extendible (activating pre-
engineered feeders) Data archiving (disturbance/events)
