5.2 Protection settings

The setting parameters are divided into several different groups
Actual settings
The parameters presented in Actual Settings can not be edited
These are the parameters in use at the moment
Setting group 1
There are two setting banks in the protection function blocks
The parameters in Setting Group 1 are the settings in the first setting bank
Setting group 2
The parameters in Setting Group 2 are the settings in the second setting bank
Control settings
These settings will affect the way the protection function blocks operate

5.2.1 Protection setting groups

Operation mode (S41)
Selection of definite time or inverse-time
characteristic
Start current (S42)
The pick up value for the protection stage
Operate time (S43)
The time delay for the protection stage
Time multiplier (S44)

5.2.2 Protection - control settings

Measuring mode (V1)
Setting alternatives: Peak to peak or fundamental frequency
In peak-to-peak measurement, the harmonics of the phase currents are not
suppressed, whereas in fundamental frequency measurement the harmonics
suppression is at least -50 dB at f = n x fn, where n = 2, 3, 4, 5,...
Normally the fundamental frequency method is used

Drop off time (V2)

The purpose of this delayed reset of the start signal is to enable fast
clearance of intermittent faults, e.g. self-sealing insulation faults, and
severe faults which may produce high asymmetrical fault currents that
partially saturate the current transformers
ABB Oy, O232(En), 6
1MRS751525-MTR

Typical setting 30ms

Group selection (V3)
Setting alternatives: Group 1, Group 2 and Group input
These settings will determine which setting bank is in use. The Group Input alternative will
enable the Group input pin on the function block

Active group (V4)

This parameter is for monitoring the active setting group, either Group 1 or Group 2
Start pulse (V5)
Minimum pulse width of START signal
Trip signal (V6)
Selection of latching feature for TRIP output
Alternatives: Latching or non latching

Trip pulse (V7)

ABB Oy, O232(En), 8

Exercise
Set the trip signal to latching on the over-
current protection stages, and simulate a fault
Unlatch the outputs

If you try to close the CB on the simulator

while the output relay is closed, the CB will not
close

Minimum time (V8)
Minimum operate time at IDMT mode
The definite minimum time will not allow an
operate time shorter than the set minimum time
Typical setting: 30ms

CBFP time (V9)

Operate time of the delayed CBFP trip

Reset registers (V13)
Resetting of latched trip signal and registers
Writing a 1 to this parameter will reset the register and unlatch the trip signal

Test start (31)

Alternatives: Do not activate, or Activate
This parameter will activate the start signal in case Activate is selected

Test trip (32)

This parameter will activate the trip signal in case Activate is selected
Test CBFP(33)
This parameter will activate the CBFP signal in case Activate is selected

Event masks
The different event mask parameters affect the visibility of events on the
MMI or on serial communication (LON or SPA) as follows:
Event mask 1 SPA / MMI
Event mask 2 LON
Event mask 3 LON
Event mask 4 LON

5.3 Function block inputs

BS1
The input is used for blocking the time delay for
the protection function
The BS1 input will freeze the timer while the
signal is active. When the signal is released the
timer will continue to count.

BS2
The input is used for blocking the trip signal
When the BS2 signal is released the protection
will immediately trip if the fault is still active
