ABSTRACT

A lot of human effort is required in carrying small to medium loads from ground floor to higher levels.
In doing so the human workers looses their energy quickly and become fatigue and may not extend
the service for prolong time. To overcome this problem a lot of attention and effort have been made
my various researches in developing equipment for vertical transportation of material over floors of
high rise building and construction.
The present work is focused on addressing a typical problem in lifting small loads over floors of
building. A human operator is need to lift the loads repeatedly for a number of times in a day. As it is
tedious and time consuming for human workers, a mechanized system is planned to develop, which
can lift small to medium loads in vertical direction ease. The main part of the project is electric gear
motor, two pulleys, rectangular container, I section frame and rope. In case of normal elevator these
are mainly used the counter weight, in this we are eliminating these principle and complexity of
fabrication. It is proposed to use the fixed frame in which a container is slides up and down. One end
of rope is fixed in a frame and passed through pulley attached with container than passed through
another pulley fixed at the top of frame and than to the hub coupled with motor shaft.

INTRODUCTION

An elevator( US and Canada) or lift ( UK, Australia ,Ireland, Newzeland &

South Africa) is a type of vertical transportation that moves people or goods
between floors (levels) of a building or other structure. Elevators are generally
powered by electric motors that either drive by traction cables or
counterweight system like a hoist or pump hydraulic fluid to raise a cylindrical
piston like a jack.
Elevators can be rope dependent or rope free. There are at least four
means of moving elevator
1)Traction elevator(gear or gear less) 2)Hydraulic ( underground) Elevator
3)Climbing elevator (self ascending) 4)pneumatic(vaccum ) Elevators
LITERATURE REVIEW

The earliest known reference to an elevator is in the works of the Roman

architect, who reported that Archimedes build his first elevator probably in
236BC.
Elevator design by German engineer KONARAD KYESER in 1405.
The safety use of elevator is carried out since 1935 using different sensors.
The lift used in these days are using the electric motor and counter weight,
in this project we are eliminating the use of counter weight and came up with
simple design of lift using electric gear motor and pulley system.
By using pulley we can reduce the load acted on the motor and can
increase the torque by reducing the speed of container motion with respect
to motor r.p.m.
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

In our department we need to carry and distribute newspapers and other

required material to all class rooms. In this case a lot of human effort and time
is consumed. So we are planning to make a material lifting equipment to
avoid the difficulties and to save the time and effort of worker in carrying the
goods from ground floor to top floor.
OBJECTIVES OF PROJECT

To design and develop a low cost material lifting equipment for a max.
load of 30 Kg with Robust construction
To built-up the 3D model of the lifting equipment
To identify light weight and low cost material for Fabrication with simple
design
Machining the raw material as per required size and shape using
conventional machine tools
Assembling the components and testing

W=Total weight of container

H=Height to be travelled by lift
T=Time taken to travel

F=Force
D=distance to be travelled
R=Radius of motor hub

MATERIAL SELECTION

We are planning to use cast iron and aluminum where the tack is made
up of cast iron and the material handling box is made from aluminum or
aluminum alloy. cast iron is cheap and can carry higher load since there is
no more force or stress is induced in a track which function is to guide the
lift box while moving up and down. The box is made from aluminum since
it can carry higher load and it is light in weight so aluminum is best suitable
for making a material handling box.
CONSTRUCTION

The frame is fixed near the building which consists of one pulley at the top.
The container is assembled with frame which provides guide ways to the
container.
Container consists of one pulley which can be move up and down with
the container.
One end of the rope is fixed in a frame top and passed through the
container pulley and than to the fame pulley and than to the motor hub.
WORKING OF LIFT
UPWARD MOTION OF CONTAINER

When motor is rotated clockwise, it pull the container upward by rotating

the rope in a hub which is coupled with motor shaft.
During the operation the rope is passed through the pulleys which is attach
to the container and frame.
The pulley which is attached with container is movable and other pulley
attached with frame is fixed.
Use of these pulley reduces the weight of container with 30kg mass to half
of its weight, thus reduce the power consumption.
DOWNWARD MOTION OF CONTAINER

Changing the polarity of current flow, the motor will rotate in anticlockwise
direction thus released the rope.
The container moves in downward direction in the action of gravity force.
PROGRESS OF WORK

The material selection for the project is completed.

The model of the project is completed.
PLAN FOR REMAINING WORK

Purchasing of the material will be done as soon as possible.

Fabrication of the project will be completed soon.
