Structure of Teeth
A tooth is divided into two parts: The crown and
one or more roots.

Crown:
The crown is divided into the anatomic and clinical
crown. The anatomical crown is that portion of
the tooth encased in the enamel and the clinical
crown is the part of the crown exposed or visible in
the mouth.

Cervix:
The cervix or cervical line is a slight indentation
that encircles the tooth and marks the junction of
the crown with the root.
The cementum joins the enamel at the cervix of the
tooth.
The point at which they join is called the
cementoenamel junction
Classification of Teeth:

Incisors (central and lateral)

Canines (cuspids)
Premolars (bicuspids)
Molars

Permukaan Proximal

Contact Point the point on the proximal

surface where two adjacent teeth actually
touch.

Interproximal Space the area between

the teeth. Part of the interproximal space
is occupied by the interdental papilla. The
interdental papilla is a triangular fold of
gingival tissue. The part of the
interproximal space not occupied is called
the embrasure.
Embrasure occupies an area bordered
by interdental papilla, proximal surfaces
of two adjacent teeth, and the contact
point.
**(If there is no contact point between
teeth then the area between them is
called a diastema.)

Occlusal: broad chewing surface found

on posterior teeth (bicuspids and molars).
Occlusion the relationship between the
occlusal surfaces of maxillary and
mandibular teeth when in contact.

Centric Occlusion the centered contact

position of the chewing surfaces of
mandibular teeth on the chewing surface
of maxillary teeth.
Angles Classification:

Class I Normal

Class II retruded (retrognathic)

Class III protruded (prognathic)

Occlusion

Key to Occlusion: When the mesiofacial

cusp of the maxillary first molar occludes
in the facial groove of the mandibular first
molar.
