GAMETOGENESIS

Gametogenesis
-First phase in the sexual reproduction of animals. Process of
formulation of sex cells.
Germ cells- give rise to gametes
Somatic cells- all the other cells in the body
Primordial germ cells- initial cells that are formed
Spermatogonia & Oogonia- stem cells, undifferentiated cells that
divide mitotically to produce two types of cells.
Gametogenesis
Major processes invovled :
1. Cell proliferation - primitive/primordial sex cells undergo mitosis repeatedly
2. Cell growth Cessation of mitosis for acquisition of raw materias and
synthesis of protoplasm
3. Cell maturation- 2 successive cell dividions(mitosis) take place. Accompanied
by chromosomal divisions, reduction of chromosomes by one
half.
Spermatogenesis
Process by which the male gametes are formed.
Occurs in the seminiferous tubules in the testis.
Grasshoppers Testis
Tetis divided into lobes
Progressive maturation stages from blunt end to the pointed end.
BLUNT- young; POINTED mature.
Fuelgen method
Specific for DNA, used for chromosome& nuclear structure, cytoplasm yellow
Cysts are inside the lobes
- Clusters of similar cells undergoing same stage of development
Grasshoppers Testis: stages of development
Primary
- Germ line
A - Undrgo cellular
Spermatocyte
division
Spermatogonia Prophase I
- Small & crowded
B 1. Leptotene largest chromatin, fills the cell
2. Zygotene pairing, draw to one side, bouquet.
- Located at blunt end -Becomes primary Synaptonemal complex. Point of
spermatocyte contact of 2 homologues.
3. Pahytene- beads, chromosomes shorten.
Exchange of chromosome arms
4. Diplotene- split chromosomes,
5. Diakinesis condensation, coiling, shortest
thickest

Spermiogenesis Secondary
Spermatozoa Spermatid spermatocyte
Spermatid elongates, - Half the size of
cytoplasm becomes tail secondary - haploid in number
sheath spematocyte - Smaller than primary
- Undergoes
Head- chromatin mass spermiogenesis
thats condensed
fertilize-: head,
middlepiece/centrosome&
mitochondria, long tail
Red-Diakinesis
Green- diplotene
