Report Text

Report is a text which present information about something. It is as a result


of systematic observation and analyses. The information given in a report
text is very general information
Social Function

The purpose of a report text is presenting information about something.


Generic Structure

General Classification
A general classification is a part that state classification of general aspect of
things, such as: animals, public places, plants, etc. It will be discussed in general.

Description
This part gives describing of the things which will be discussed in detail, in terms
of: parts, qualities, habits, and behavior.
Language Features

Use of general nouns


An object of a general nature
Example: Use hunting dogs, rather than particular nouns, eg our dog.
Linking Verbs

Use of relating verbs to describe features, the grammar is also called


linking verbs.
A linking verb connects the subject with a word that gives information about the
subject, such as a condition or relationship. They do not show any action; but,
they link the subject with the rest of the sentence. For example, in the sentence
"They are a problem," the word "are" is the linking verb that connects "they" and
"problem" to show the relationship between the two words.
Example: [to be], have, has, get, look, seems, etc

William is excited about his promotion.
He went red after tripping on the rug.
You look exhausted after studying all night.
I am putty in his hands.
Maria might have been more forthcoming with the news.

Action verbs

Use of action verbs when describing behavior


Action verbs are verbs that specifically describe what the subject of the
sentence is doing. These types of verbs carry a great deal of information in a
sentence and can convey emotion and a sense of purpose that extends
beyond the literal meanings of the words.
Sam and Eric ride the bus to school each morning.
Please call your mom.
Do you think it will rain today?

Billy jumped out of his bed Friday morning. He ran to the kitchen singing at the top of his lungs. Billy,
you sure sound happy this morning! said Billys mother. I am! Billy replied as he sat at the breakfast
table. He gobbled his food down as fast as he could. Then he raced out the door and jumped on the
school bus. When the bus pulled up in front of the school Billy was still sinking. When it was time for
class, David whispered, You better stop singing. Youll get into trouble. But Billy picked another song
and continued on. The teacher, Mrs. Grump, was talking about nouns and verbs when Billy started his
tenth song of the day. Billys classmates giggled and then laughed out loud, but Billy kept right
on singing. Mrs. Grump, however, wasnt singing at all. She wrote a note to Billys parents and you
know what they decided? No listening to his IPod for two whole days! So Billy learned to sing only in
the shower, in choir, outdoors, or with his friends. Just about anywhere but in the classroom!
Language Features

Use of timeless present tense to indicate usualness.


E.g. Tropical cyclones always begin over the sea.
Use of technical terms
E.g Isobars are lines drawn on a weather map.
Use of simple present tense.
