Van De Graaff generator is baically a
charge seprator which seperates
positive and negative charges from
electric current.
Van De Graaff generator is used to
generate high potential differences of
near about million volts.
The Van de Graaff generator was developed,
starting 1929, by physicist Robert J. Van de
Graaff at Princeton University with a fellowship,
with help from colleague Nicholas Burke.
The first model was demonstrated during
October 1929.[8] The first machine used an
ordinary tin can, a small motor, and a silk
ribbon bought at a five-and-dime store.
The normal
electricity generator
it may be either AC
or DC works on
Faradays law of
electromagnetic
induction.
But this Van De Graaff
generator works on
static electricity
concept.
Static electricity is an imbalance of electric charges
within or on the surface of a material.
Combing your hair moves electrons from your hair to
the comb.
The comb will now have an electric static charge.
1) Materials involved

2) Surface area
connecting the
materials

3) Humidity
Some atoms hold on to
their electrons more
tightly than others do.
How strongly matter
holds on to its electrons
determines its place in
the Triboelectric
series.
Major parts of
Generator are:
Motor
Two rollers
A belt
Two brush
assemblies
An output
terminal(usually a
aluminum sphere).
A Van de Graaff
generator is
an electrostatic
generator which uses a
moving belt to
accumulate electric
charge on a hollow
metal globe on the top
of an insulated column,
creating very
high electric
potentials.
Its series connection allows only one
route for the movement of charges.
For generating high voltages, size
becomes more and also cost becomes
more.
It provides low current at higher
voltages.
It is used to generate x-rays, which is
widely used in medicine field.
It is used in atom smashers, which is
used in research purposes.
It found applications in physics,
medicine, and astro physics.
