Element Method
Procedure
Overview
Following are the steps to perform the analysis of fracture by finite element method
3D model of the blade is modeled in (Please mention the software and its released version)
and imported to ANSYS Spaceclaim 18.1 in neutral format(.step) to perform the geometry
cleanup and to prepare the model for finite element analysis.
Import the CAD model by selecting file option as shown in the figure.
Performing basic geometry cleanup operation.
Assigning material property . Pre-processing
Finite element model of the turbine blade is modeled using 10 noded(2nd order/Higher
order) tetra element. Turbine is meshed element size of 10mm and critical region is
meshed with element size of 2mm.
Generating Fracture. Pre-processing
A semi eliptical crackis introduced in the model by using fracture tool available in ANSYS
Workbench.
Crack on the turbine is generated by giving input such as crack shape, minor radius and major
radius, etc,. As shown in the figure.
Applying boundary and loading conditions. Pre-processing
The inner cylindrical surface of the turbine is constrained in all 3 DOF as shown in the figure.
Applying boundary and loading conditions. Pre-processing
A rotational velocity of -1050 rad/s is applied to turbine with respect to the local co-
ordinate system of inner cylindrical surface of the turbine.
Numerical Solution. Solution
Finite element analysis is performed on the turbine blade by considering the analysis
settings as shown the figure.
Result evaluation and interpretation of the result. Post-processing
After the solution part is completed, required results such as deformation, stress and
fracture parameters are evaluated.
