ANDRES BONIFACIO

ANDRES BONIFACIO
Andres Bonifacio simmered with rage and humiliation.
The movement that he had created to oppose Spanish
colonial rule in the Philippines had just voted (likely in a
rigged election) to make his rival Emilio Aguinaldo
president in his stead. Bonifacio was given the lowly
consolation prize of an appointment as Secretary of the
Interior in the revolutionary government.
ANTONIO LUNA
ANTONIO LUNA
Soldier, chemist, musician, war
strategist, journalist, pharmacist, and
hot-head: General Antonio Luna was a
complex man. Unfortunately for Luna,
the Philippines' first president - the
ruthless Emilio Aguinaldo - perceived
him as a threat. As a result, Antonio
Luna died not on the battlefields of the
Philippine/American War, but on the
streets of Cabanatuan.
RODRIGO DUTERTE
RODRIGO DUTERTE
Rodrigo Duterte was born on March 28, 1945, in Maasin,
Southern Leyte, Philippines. The son of a regional
governor, he graduated from law school in 1972 and
joined the City Prosecution Office of Davao City. Duterte
became Davao City mayor in 1988, and was reelected six
times after forging a reputation for being tough on crime.
He earned a decisive victory in his country's 2016
presidential election, but soon drew criticism for his
support of extrajudicial killings and threats to cut
diplomatic ties with the U.S.
APOLINARIO MABINI
APOLINARIO MABINI
Like fellow Philippine revolutionaries Jose Rizal and
Andres Bonifacio, lawyer Apolinario Mabini, the first prime
minister of the Philippines, did not live to see his 40th
birthday. He suffered from paraplegia (paralysis of the
legs), but Mabini had a powerful intellect, and was known
during his short life as the "Brains of the Revolution" and
also the "Conscience of the Revolution."
GLORIA ARROYO
GLORIA ARROYO
Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is a Filipino politician who went on to
become the first female Vice President of Philippines and also served
two terms as the president of the country. Daughter of former
President Diosdado Macapagal, politics was not something that
Gloria had in her mind early on in her life. She studied economics and
obtained a Ph.D. in the subject, before going on to work as a
professor at some of the leading educational institutions in
Philippines. In 1987, she joined the government of Corazon Acquino
as Undersecretary in the Department of Trade and Industry. She was
senator for six years from 1992 to 1998 before she was elected as the
Vice President under the presidency of Joseph Estrada. She served
as President of Philippines from 2001 to 2010. Her presidency was
fraught with troubles as she had to fight impeachment charges, quell
internal disturbances and terrorist threats. Following the end of her
second tenure as the president she found herself in considerable
trouble as she was charged with electoral malpractice and corruption
that saw her being sent to jail.
