CONVENTIONS OF DOCUMENTARY
Voiceover will usually be authoritative in some way, encouraging the audience to think that they either have some
kind of specialist knowledge
Interviews with experts used to authenticate the views expressed in the documentary. Sometimes, they will
disagree with the message of the documentary, although the film maker will usually disprove them in some way.
Actuality footage This may be a recording of an actual event which is documented with the real people involved
and not actors
Archival footage- not taken by you but is taken by somewhere else or can be historical or family footage.
Reconstructions remakes of scenes or stories or accounts made, that happen to give background information
and a more in depth insight.
Credits The insert of information, dates, time etc.. New programmes commonly use this to their advantage, its a
quick way of conveying and reiterating information or can be used to give further information which may not have
been previously presented.
CODES AND CONVENTIONS
Vox Pop- the voice of the population used to generalise the documentary.
Music- used to gain interest into the piece of documentary or used to fill empty space or to alleviate
viewers from presenters voice.
Factual information- the facts given within the documentary, the truth and only this will be given.
Hand held- to show that it is real life and can be free moving.
Static camera and experts and expert shot- used to show a more professional outlook and also give
authenticity to the documentary. Having the positioned to the ouside of the camera frame looking into
the empty space.
Mediation and MES The background and scenery, mediation also is the editorial and a message
through filming
NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
Documentaries rely heavily on narrative conventions. They have a definite beginning, middle and
end. They conventionally include music and sound making it more interesting
Conflict- can be shown through opinion, personal account, narrator, reconstructions and Vox
pops
Music and sound effects- To create emotions and to add interest. The music normally goes
quieter behind an interview.
Selection and construction- Topics, who?, what?, when?, why? And how? (mediation and gate
keeping)
Inserts and cut away - Creates pace and therefore mood with interview no more than 10 seconds
of still camera to keep interest
Cost- needs to be taken into account as if things are cut or added again this mediation can
cause misrepresentation.
Narrative structure for our documentary is Means there is unanswered questions so it is open to
the reading. The audience are able to decide what there take away of the documentary was. Our
documentary will be open narrative because we dont have the time or money to investigate our
questions further and due to having 5 minutes of edited footage a conclusion couldn'tt be made
NARRATIVE
Starts a one point and finishing on the same point. No loose ends with
quick closer, however you can end on the first question that is posed.
This will create an end to the narrative. Ours will relate just back to he
question given at the beginning
TARGET AUDIENCE
14-50 ( adults and their children so not necessarily 20-35 year olds) as
we need to investigate the generations and how they are impacted
differently when technology is involved.

FILMING LOCATIONS
Strengths -Easy to find footage as there are many vox pops and
accounts accessible
Articles on this topic are easy to find as a lot of research has been
given into these situation.
Experts are also accessible as this is a grouping over the last
generation.
WEAKNESS
Whether or not people will be willing to discuss and talk to us in the vox
pops.
The location chosen may not get the shots for the montage as we need
people to be on there phones however people may not be on their
phone, the camera may also alter people's behaviour as they will act
up to the camera.
