Fernando Amorsolo

was one of the most important
artists in the history of painting in
the Philippines

Philippine landscapes
popularly known for his
craftsmanship and mastery in the
use of light
Early Life and Education
Amorsolo was born in May 30, 1892 in Paco, Manila.
Don Fabin de la Rosa, his mother's cousin was also a Filipino painter.
At the age of 13, Amorsolo became an apprentice to De la Rosa
During this time, Amorsolo's mother embroidered to earn money,
while Amorsolo helped by selling water color postcards to a local
bookstore for ten centavos each.
Amorsolo's first success as a young painter came in 1908, when his
painting Leyendo el peridico took second place at the Bazar Escolta,
a contest organized by the Asociacion Internacional de Artistas.
Between 1909 and 1914, Amorsolo enrolled at the Art School of the
Liceo de Manila
Early Life and Education
After graduating from the Liceo, he entered the University of the
Philippines' School of Fine Arts
Amorsolo's most notable work as student at the Liceo was his
painting of a young man and a young woman in a garden, which won
him the first prize in the art school exhibition during his graduation
year.
To make money during school, Amorsolo joined competitions and did
illustrations for various Philippine publications, including Severino
Reyes first novel in Tagalog language, Parusa ng Diyos \, Iigo Ed.

Philippines in 1914.

Fabin de la Rosa
May 5, 1869 December 14, 1937
was the brightest name in Philippine
painting after Luna and certainly the
leading master of genre in the first
quarter of the century.
Particularly noted for being an
outstanding painter of womens
portraits, alongside Juan Luna and
his nephews, Pablo and Fernando
Amorsolo.
Early Life and Education
was born in Paco, Manila to husband and wife Marcos de la Rosa and
Gorgonia Cueto.
Born to a family of artists, he was exposed to art at an early age and
learned to draw well before he could write.
He was trained to sketch portraits and landscapes by his aunt,
Marciana de la Rosa, when he was ten years old.
He also apprenticed under his uncle, Simn Flores y de la Rosa, a well-
known painter of portraits and church interiors from the nineteenth
century.
De la Rosa lived most of his life in the Philippines and visited Europe
for the first time when he was 39. He married Gorgonia Tolentino in
January 13, 1900.
Early Life and Education
De la Rosa received formal education at the age of 12 when he
enrolled at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios in 1881.
In 1893, He entered the Escuela Superior de Pintura Escultura y
Grabado at the age of 24.
In 1898, de la Rosa won a contest for a scholarship to Spanish Art
Academy of San Fernando in Madrid.
Under the American regime, the Escuela would become one of the
three founding units of the University of the Philippines (established
in 1908) and renamed the UP School of Fine Arts.In 1908, he traveled
to Europe as a pensionado through a scholarship opportunity given by
the Germinal Cigar Factory. He attended the Acadmie Julian in Paris,
France.

Jorge Pineda (1879-1946)
a Filipino visual artist who was born in 1879
Jorge Pineda has had several gallery and museum exhibitions,
including at the Museum of Latin American Art .
Many works by the artist have been sold at auction, including
'Sungkaan' sold at Leon Gallery, Makati 'The Magnificent September
Auction 2015' in 2015 for $149,966.
Together with Fernando Amorsolo, Jose Pereira, and Irineo Miranda,
Jorge Pineda belonged to the first generation of Filipino cartoonists to
have emerged during the early years of the American occupation.
The artist died in 1946.

Ireneo Miranda (1896-1964)
was born in San Fernando, Pampanga.
He was a Philippine painter, illustrator and cartoonist.
He graduated from the U.P. School of Fine Arts in 1916. At first he
made labels and advertisements for the Pacific Commercial Company,
but eventually he became a member of the faculty of the U.P. School
of Fine Arts. He was an illustrator for the periodicals Liwayway and El
Debate, and created the cover design for the first Graphic magazine.
He was considered the best watercolorist and political cartoonist of
his time. He was known as the Dean of Filipino Cartoonists.

Dominador Castaeda
April 8 1904- November 27 1967
A painter and a writer
was a close friend and contemporary of Fernando Amorsolo
His works were in contrast to Amorsolo's yellow and orange-flecked
scenery. His landscapes are rendered in white and light blue tones
that is evoking cool atmosphere.
Born in 1904, he compelted his fine arts at the University of the
Philippines at 20; after which he sailed for America to the Art Institute
of Chicago on a Sherman Fairman Tuition Scholarship.

He Traveled to Mexico and stayed overseas for six years , returning to


join the faculty of UP where he subsequently rose to be its director in
1955.

His paintings diverged from the characteristic style of the Amorsolo


school and a different direction , especially in color.
Well known for landscapes rendered in cool tones of white and blue.
