Shear Wall
Shear walls are vertical elements of the horizontal
force resisting system.
Resist lateral forces caused by wind, earthquake, and
uneven settlement loads.
Provide adequate strength and stiffness to control
lateral displacements.
Placement of Shear Wall
Located symmetrically to avoid ill effects of
twisting.
Symmetry can be along one or both the
directions.
Can be located at exterior or interior.
Design Procedure of Shear Wall
Check the given shear wall thickness (d).
Check diagonal cracking strength and flexural
tensile stress of shear wall (Vc).
Determine horizontal shear reinforcement
with spacing and check.
Determine vertical shear reinforcement with
spacing and check.
Determine vertical flexural reinforcement with
spacing and check.
Draw a net sketch of shear wall.
