A Definition

Self-Directed Learning
Self-Directed learning can be defined as
a process in which individuals take the
initiative, with or without the help from
others, in diagnosing their learning needs,
formulating goals, identifying human and
material resources, choosing and
implementing appropriate leaning
strategies and evaluating leaning
outcomes (Loyens, Magda, Rikers, 2008,
p1).
Goals of Self-Directed Learning
Enhance the ability of adult learners to be self-directed
in their learning
To foster transformational learning as central to self-
directed learning
To promote emancipatory learning and social action as
an integral part of self-directed learning
(Merriam, Baumgartner, Caffarella, 2007, p107)
Environment
Communities of Practice
Communities of practice are groups of people who
share a concern or a passion for something they do and
learn how to do it better as they interact regularly
(Wenger, 2009, p1).
In the educational environment, teachers and
educators engage in conversations and training to
promote forward thinking and sharing best practices.
Many of these communities of practice occur virtually
online, providing resources to isolated educators.
Self-Directed Learning in Communities
of Practice
Discussing Developments
Seeking Experience
Mapping Knowledge
and Identifying Gaps
Reusing Assets
Problem Solving
Requests for Information
Coordination and
Synergy
(Wenger, 2009, p2)
Examples
A professor living in a rural mid-west town, teaches an
online course at a University. In order to stay up to
date on current teaching methods and to improve her
skill, she participates in an online chat room with other
professors where they are able to share documents and
engage in conversations.
A group of teachers working within the same school
system get together monthly after work to discuss what
has been happening in their classrooms, strategies they
have been using and what they are planning to do in
the future.
