Identify the vascular pole of a good
glomerulus by the attachment of
the capillary tuft to the wall of the
glomerulus.
Presence of a tubulus which
contains a dense row of nuclei in
the part of its wall closest to the
vascular pole of the glomerulus, the
macula densa. The nuclei are
located side by side or may even
overlap.
Proximal tubules are characterised
by their eosinophilic (pink) low,
columnar cells and by large
amounts of fuzzy material, which
may fill the entire lumen. It
represents the remains of the brush
border, which is difficult to preserve
during preparation of the tissue.
The bulk of the cortex consists of convoluted tubules. Cells comprising proximal tubules stain
more intensely eosinophilic than those comprising distal tubules, and have nuclei spaced
somewhat farther apart. The lumens of distal tubules (d) commonly appear more open and
clear than those of proximal tubules (p).

A descending thin segment of the loop of Henle, lined by squamous epithelial cells;
An ascending thick segment of the loop of Henle, lined by cuboidal epithelial cells having
eosinophilic cytoplasm and no apparent cell boundaries; and
A collecting duct, lined by cuboidal epithelial cells having relatively clear cytoplasm and
distinct cell boundaries.

This image shows several large collecting ducts near the end of a medullary pyramid (i.e., close
to their opening into the pelvis). The transitional epithelium of the renal pelvis is continuous
with that of the ureters and bladder.
