Nund reshi (Sheikh Ul Alam)
Nund reshi also known as Sheikh Noor ud-Din Wali, Sheikh Noor ud-Din Noorani
and popularly known as Sheikh Ul Alam
He is considered to be founder of the Rishi order of saints which deeply influenced
many great mystics like Hamza Makhdoom, Resh Mir Seb , Shamas Faqir till
present day.
Nund Rishi was born in a village called Qaimoh in Kulgam district in the year
649 Kashmiri Calendar
His father's name was Sheikh Sala-ud-din his mother Sadra, was called Sadra Moji
or Sadra Deddi.
It is said that he lived for twelve years in the wilderness. Hence, perhaps, kaimuh is
given the derivation of kai-wan (or ban, a forest) in rustic belief. The actual cave of
contemplation is shown in kaimuh and is about 10 feet deep
He is claimed to have sustained life on one cup of milk daily. Finally, he reduced
himself to water alone, and died at the age of 63.
The tomb of Sheikh Nur-ud-din at Charari Sharief, a small town perched on a dry
bare hill, 20 miles south west of Srinagar, is visited by pilgrims to the present day.
Contribution
During his lifetime, he witnessed much change in the valley,
from Hinduism to Islam. Various historical events helped to shape his mind in
such a manner that he produced some works of philosophy, in his own manner
of verses and poetry
Sheikh ul-Alam was deeply affected by such events and this is apparent in his
verses. The biggest event that occurred in the Sheikh's childhood was the
coming of another Sufi preacher, Said-Ul-Auliya Hazrat Ali Sani Mir Syed
Hamadani, to Kashmir. Ali al-Hamadani, as he was popularly called, came to
Kashmir in September 1372 CE.
Sheikh Nur-ud-din's life has impressed the Kashmiri people. The Afghan
governor, Ata Muhammad Khan, gave, as it were, expression to public
sentiment when coins were struck by him in the name of Sheikh Nur-ud-din
He used his poetry as tool to spread the knowledge of absolute . His poetry is
commonly known as Shrukhs.
One of his most famous and oft quoted couplets is "Ann poshi teli yeli wann
poshimeaning 'Food will last as long as forests last
The University of Kashmir has honored his name by creating the Shaikh-ul-
Alam Chair.
Peerzada Ghulam Ahmad(Mahjoor)
Contribution
Mahjoor has a place of honour among the poet
of kashmir.
He is especillay known for two things. First, he
introduced a new style into Kashmir poetry.
Second, he introduced new thoughts to the
Kashmir poetry.
He wrote poems of freedom and progress in
Kashmiri. These songs awakened the sleeping
kashmiris. He came with a new voice and a new
(literary) form.
Lal Ded
Lalleshwari also known as Lal ded
Lalleshwari was born in Pandrethansome four and a half miles to
the southeast of Srinagar in a Kashmiri Pandit family in the time
of Sultan Ala-ud-din
There is evidence of the fact that in those times, liberal
education was imparted to women. From her vakhs, one is
persuaded to believe that she was educated in the early part of
the life at her father's house
She was married at age twelve, but her marriage was unhappy
and she left home at twenty-four to take Sannyasa
she ultimately excelled in spiritual attainments. She continued
the mystic tradition of Shaivism in Kashmir, which was known
as Trika before 1900.
Contribution
Her poems are also called vakhs have been translated into English by
Richard Temple, Jaylal Kaul, Coleman Barks, Jaishree Odin, and Ranjit
Hoskote
The leading Kashmiri Sufi figure Sheikh Noor-ud-din Wali (also known
as Nooruddin Rishi or Nunda Rishi) was highly influenced by Lal Ded.

Translation
With a rope of loose-spun thread am I towing
my boat upon the sea.
Would that God heard my prayer

Like water in cups of unbaked clay

Wahab Khaar
Wahab Khaar was born at Khrew Shaar, Pampore.
He had fine and beautiful long life of one hundred years there
is uncertainty in the birth and death date of Wahab Khaar,
some historian say he died in the year 1910.
His father Hait Khaar was also a Sufi saint and poet, well
known, respected and reputed man of the area.
Wahab Khaar belonged to a Sufi family and as such he was
inclined to Sufism from the very birth he was fond of writing
and singing from early age.
By profession he was a blacksmith. He was a handsome lad
used to wear fine looking outfit, he was famous throughout
the area from childhood
Wahab Khaar dedicated his life in writing poetry and singing
in presence of great Sufi saints of the time.
Contribution
One of the worth mentioned quality of Jenab Wahab Sahab Khar was his
determination and regard for his land that he tilted himself to inspire others
to follow the suit.
WAHAB-KHAAR was also a hard working farmer; he had vast wasteland
which he turned into agricultural land by his own efforts, on the other hand
he was a deep lover of singing, he used to play so many instruments like
Sarnagi, Gadda (Vessel) and Rabab
He had complete party of singers who used to go village to village for
singing. When farmers had time of reaping, his party used to sing there for
their entertainment and get rice, wheat and mustard seeds in reciprocation.
