SPM JOHOR 2011
Students should be given less homework. Do you agree ?

Homework is defined as out-of-class tasks assigned to

students as an extension or elaboration of classroom work.
There are three types of homework: practice, preparation, and
extension. In recent years, parents pay more attention to education,
which brings up directly their children to be perfect and mature. They
realize that students face to many difficulties and straining
during process of learning, especially homework. Whether students
should be given homework or not is still on debate. Many people
think that schoolwork is not good for teenagers since it causes too
much anxious for students and takes a large amount of time.
However, I absolutely believe that students will achieve such
great advantages when complete coursework as grasping the
knowledge firmly and becoming fully aware of their study. It means
that students may feel more confident and optimistic about
their cognition. Therefore, homework is essential in students
learning

One of the main reasons that homework should be given for

learners is to attain knowledge meticulously. This is because
homework has an important role to consolidate background
knowledge in schoolbook. By revision or practice, students have a
good understanding of the lesson had been taught in class. Besides
grasping the fundamental firmly, students also
strengthen their cognition and apply usefully in other facts. For
example, sometimes learners force to find out information in other
sources and increase their attainment unwittingly
so that complete schoolwork indefectibly. Clearly, students'
homework helps to take these great effects.

Pg 8
Another principal cause for giving schoolwork is making
students be much more aware of their learning. Learners are
answerable for their study thoroughly so they oblige to put a
great deal of effort into theory apprehension. Therefore, the
accomplishment of prep is not only a responsibility for
students to try their best but also a motivation to strengthen the
cognition. Moreover, finishing homework helps learners becomes
much more active to attain knowledge. It is easier for them to grasp
the information in next lessons. By degrees, students might raise the
sense of initiative in learning and others which is extremely
favorable to handle unexpected situation. For that reasons, it is
deadly beneficial for students to be given homework.

Another benefit of homework is that students can foster a good

habit such as time management. They can They start allotting
their time to study and play thus learning to complete their scheduled
tasks in the time they have. Moreover, they learn to do things on
their own. They manage their time and complete their work
independently. Homework encourages self-discipline in students. As
a result, they can hand in their homework on time and this will give
them a sense of achievement.

On the other hand, homework builds up an initiative in

students. They initiate study. Teachers get the schoolwork done from
students whereas students initiate doing homework. There is a sense
of responsibility associated with completing their homework.
Children feel responsible for finishing homework and accomplished
when they do it. Homework that gradually increases every year
enhances academic achievement. Students score better on class tests.
Homework helps in the development of an attitude to explore and
learn. It thus improves their academic results. Homework definitely
gives students the practice of whatever they learn in school and
practice makes them perfect!

Pg 9
In conclusion, it is often argued that homework is not
good for students, I strongly believe that homework gives some
crucial benefits for them that were emphasized like enhancing
understanding and having a better awareness.

JOHOR SET A 2017
Examinations should be banned. Do you agree?
Examinations good or bad?

Examinations are good and it is a must. They are a means to evaluate the
performance and assess the academic achievements of students. They aim at testing
the students grasp and understanding of the subjects taught to them.
Obviously, examinations have come to play an important part in ones
educational career. In fact, most students are afraid of examinations. In my point of
view, I strongly think that examination should not be banned.
No examinations may lead students to nowhere. Studies will no more be an
orchard of knowledge. The ability to pass an examination is indeed a
valuable quality. It shows that the student is able to express his thoughts and ideas
in a manner others can understand. It also shows that the student has
acquired a certain amount of knowledge in some branches of study. Besides,
the mind of a student, even if he is dull, receives good exercise when he
prepares for an examination. A students success in an examination therefore helps
employers and others to assess his mental or general ability.
One may doubt about the existence of educational institutions,
especially colleges, if there are no examinations. Some may disappear. Others
would remain but known only for fun and frolic. College unions would be
more important than the classes. The classes may run. But the teachers will have to
arrange programmes in the classes to attract the students. As such students will only
go for selective studies done through selective books, guides and notes. Even the
strenuous two months before the examinations will be left for relaxation.

Pg 11
Examinations pave the route to students to portray their
excellence in studies. They are able to compete with each other in order to
prove their mental powers. Students will be able to show their intelligence
and power of reasoning especially if they are sitting for higher examinations.
There are so many subjects taught in schools and a student can indicate
his grasp of the subjects that he has studied.

Without examinations, institutions of education will face difficulties in

assessing the mental capabilities of the students. Selections of
candidates for careers will also become a problem as paper qualifications play
a vital role in the career arena. Examinations enable students to qualify
for scholarship apart from gaining entry into institutions of higher learning.

The excellence of examinations consists of its objectives and the goal

of evaluating the quantum of knowledge acquired by students and of grading
them. As such, the world of academicians will be filled with poor souls
without examinations.
