Enduring Understanding
Choices in data collection and
representation affect their interpretation and
use.
Essential Questions
Can Statistics Lie?
When is a specific central tendency most
appropriate?
How do we show data?
How do we decide which graph to use for
an accurate statistical display?
Objectives
Students will demonstrate their ability to
collect, organize, and display data and will
interpret information obtained from
displays. They will write reports based on
statistical information.
Students will select and use appropriate
tools and technology resources to
accomplish a variety of tasks.
Evidence of Understanding
Students will create and analyze bar graphs,
circle graphs and line graphs.
Students will make connections as to when
each of these graphs are appropriate for
accurate statistical displays.
Learning For Students
Line Plots: Use symbols above a number line to
show data.
Bar Graphs: Uses vertical or horizontal bars to
show data. (Reflects static info.)
Circle Graph: Illustrates relative magnitudes or
frequencies. Each piece has a relationship to the
whole. (Reflects static info.)
Line Graph: Shows increases or decreases over
time. (Reflects trends.)
Goals
Using candy with 25-30 pieces with
assorted colors in sample size, students will
collect and organize data to model and find
the measures of central tendencies (range,
mode, median and mean).
Using Microsoft Excel, students will
display and interpret data by creating bar
graphs, circle graphs, and line graphs.
Learning For Students
Range: Difference between greatest number and
least number. (Helpful to determine median.)
Mode: Number that occurs most often.
Median: Middle number when data are in order.
Mean(Average): The answer when the sum of a
set of numbers is divided by the number of
addends.
Think
What colors are in the typical sample size?
What central tendency would we use to
analyze the colors in a typical package of
candy (sample size) - range, mode, median,
or mean (average)?
Bar Graphs
Bar Graph
Does this bar graph
represent the colors in
the typical package of
candy?
Directions
Each student will have a package of candy.

Count each color in your box.

Each student will have his/her own color of

candy to analyze.
Data Table

your specific color of Red Candy (Group 1)
candy using the data People Number of Candy's

Bar Graph
Create a bar graph for
your specific color of
candies using the data

other members in your
group.
Analyze
Analyze the data.
Compute the range, mode, median, and
mean (average).
Choose which central tendency to use by
analyzing your data table and bar graph to
accurately represent the data for your color
on a group data table and bar graph.
Cooperative Groups
Which central tendency did you chose to
represent your color? Why?

Work cooperatively to create a data table &

bar graph for the typical package of candy
including every color, within your group.
Assessment
Based on the data table, graphs and
calculations are the colors in the teachers
package of candy a typical package of
candy?
Why or why not?
Interpretation
What colors appeared most often or least
often?
Were there gaps, extreme values or clusters
of data?
Were there trends in the data?
Which measure(s) of tendency -range,
mode, median, or mean ( average) helped
you determine your answer?
Closing
If you were a candy manufacturer, which
measure(s) of tendency would help you the
most when analyzing and predicting sales?
Tomorrow we will publish our data tables
and bar graphs using Microsoft Excel.
Once we have analyzed all of the data we
will write to the candy manufacturer with
our insights and suggestions.

Connection
How might the data we collected for the bar
graphs be used in our circle graphs?
Do both graphs reflect the same type of
information?
How is a circle graph different from a bar
graph?
How might we alter our data to meet the
requirements for a circle graph?
Essential Questions
Can Statistics Lie?
What happened to our data in Excel when
we pressed circle graph using our same bar
graph data table?
How do we decide which graph to use for
an accurate statistical display?
Think...
What colors are in the typical package of

What does a circle graph represent?
How might we alter the data to conform to
the circle graph requirements, while
creating an accurate statistical display.

Connection
When do we use a line graph?
What does a line graph represent
statistically?
Can bar graphs, circle graphs, and line
graphs represent the same statistical data?
Why or why not?
Analysis
If line graphs show increases or decreases
over time, can we use a line graph to
represent the colors in a typical package of
candy? Why or why not?
Think...
Since line graphs reflect trends, we can not
use a line graph to present a static condition,
in this case, the colors in a typical package
of candy.
What can we use line graphs to represent.
Think...
If we have pricing data for more than 1 year
can we use this data to create a line graph?
Why or why not?
What other information could we analyze to
display a trend using a line graph?
Suggested Retail Pricing

2000 $0.50
2002 $0.50
2004 $0.50
2006 $0.75
2008 $0.75
Data Table
Create a data table using the suggested retail
pricing.

Hint: Remember your title and labels.

Line Graph
Create a line graph representing the pricing
information in the data table.

Hint: Remember the vertical axis always

starts at zero.
Interpretation
Given the trend in the candy pricing, what
do you predict the price to be in 2009?
Why?
Enrichment
Does the suggested retail price go up or
down as we buy candies in larger
quantities?
How would we analyze this problem?
Enrichment
Calculate the price per pound.
Calculate the price per ounce for each
different package size.
Analyze the trend from the lowest price to
highest price.
Display data using a line graph.
Predict the price for the next largest size
package.
