What is WIMAX?
WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for
Microwave Access).
provides wireless data over long
distances in a variety of ways, from
point-to-point links to full mobile cellular
type access
It is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard
= WirelessMAN

6
KIT,Tiptur
IEEE 802.16
a standards-based technology enabling
the delivery of last mile wireless
broadband access as an alternative to
cable and DSL.
The standard is called 802.16-2004

KIT,Tiptur
Infrastructure of WIMAX
A WiMAX tower, similar in
concept to a cell-phone tower -
A single WiMAX tower can
provide coverage to a very
large area as big as 3,000
square miles (~8,000 square
km).

A WiMAX receiver - The

receiver and antenna could be
a small box or Personal
Computer Memory card, or
they could be built into a laptop
the way WiFi access is today

The Wireless Aspect

11
KIT,Tiptur
Line-of-sight service
A fixed dish antenna points
straight at the WiMAX tower
from a rooftop or pole.
66 GHz frequency range
Higher frequencies, there is
less interference and lots more
bandwidth
30-mile radius

12
KIT,Tiptur
•Non-line-of-sight
•A small antenna on
your computer
connects to the tower
•2 GHz to 11 GHz
frequency range
•Limited to a 4-to-6
mile radius

Advantages of WIMAX over WIFI
Speed
– Faster than broadband service
Wireless
– Not having to lay cables reduces cost
– Easier to extend to suburban and rural areas

Broad Coverage
– Much wider coverage than WiFi hotspots

Other advantages in a nutshell
Robust, reliable carrier class “last-mile”
technology with QoS
For many types of high-bandwidth
applications
- at the same time, across long distances
Enabling new applications that improve
daily life

WiMax benefits
Consumers
– More choices for getting broadband access!
Operators
– More choices for efficient use of valuable spectrum
– Multiple equipment suppliers + lower costs = lower
investment risk
– Fill broadband access gaps for Residential & Business
– Quickly provision broadband access & service levels

Equipment makers
– No longer need to develop every piece of the end-to-end
solution
– Can innovate more rapidly
Component makers
– Creates a volume opportunity for silicon suppliers

FUTURE of Wimax
WiMax will be deployed in three stages

– In the first phase WiMaX technology (based on IEEE

802.16) provides fixed wireless connections

– In the second phase WiMaX will be available as a cheap

and self-installing Subscriber Terminal (ST), linked to PC
and to antenna

– The third phase enables portability, thus WiMAX (based

on IEEE 802.16e) will be integrated into commercial
laptops

Conclusion
WiMAX advantages exceed the performance and
cost advantages that people talk about always.

WiMAX offers developing and poor areas wireless

access without the need to a proper infrastructure
such as cabling and jacking the wireless.

Along with the forthcoming standardization, WiMAX

has the potential to substitute 3G and become a
promising 4G
