WHAT IS A RELAY???

TYPES OF RELAYS BASED ON TECHNOLOGY

ELECTRO MECHANICAL RELAYS

NUMERICAL RELAYS

STATIC RELAYS
IDENTIFICATION OF RELAYS
MODEL : By referring the model name we can find out
No. of elements to be tested in that relay
Ex : CDG 31
Here 3 means the relay contains 3 elements in 1 unit
EX : CDG 61
Here 6 means the relay contains 6 elements in 1 unit
NOTE:
It is always best practice to know the type of protection
the relay provides to decide the No of elements to be
tested
TYPE CDG 11
OVERCURRENT AND
EARTH FAULT RELAY

CDG 11 drawn out from case

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
It is a non directional heavily damped induction disc relay which has an adjustable
inverse time current characteristics

This relay has a high torque movement combined with low burden & low overshoot

In this relay the disc is so shaped that as it rotates, the driving torque increases and
offsets the changing restraining torque.

This feature combined with high torque of relay ensures good contact pressure
even at currents near pick up level

The unique method of winding the operating coil ensures that the time/current
characteristics are identical on each of the seven taps
FORMULAE:

Current Setting of Electromechanical

Relays: Current Setting of relay is nothing but
adjusting its pick-up value.
Pick-up current = Plug Position x Rated CT
Secondary Current.

Plug Setting Multiplier (PSM): Plug

Setting Multiplier (PSM) is defined as the
ratio of fault current to the pick-up current of
the relay. Thus,
PSM = Fault Current / Pick-up Current
= Fault Current / (Plug Position x
Secondary rated CT current),

Time Setting Multiplier : By increasing or

decreasing TSM, we can increase or decrease
operating time proportionately
Time-current characteristics
Starting current Inverse time relay CDG 11
103-105% of current setting 1.3sec

Closing current
Not more than 130% of current
setting

Resetting current
The disc will completely reset
At 90% or more of current
setting

Thermal rating
The relay will withstand 20 times
the maximum current setting

Multiples of plug setting

TYPE CDD
DIRECTIONAL OVERCURRENT AND
EARTH FAULT RELAY

FEATURES:
Sensitive directional discrimination down to 1%
rated voltage.
It employs the principle of actuation of relay.
High speed directional control.
Identical time/current characteristics on all taps.
Dust tight drawout case and tropicalised finish
Low overshoot.

APPLICATIONS:
Directional phase or earth fault protection of ring mains,
parallel transformers feeders etc.employing the
time graded principle
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

It employs the principle of actuation of relay, when fault current flows in the relay
in particular direction.

Type CDD relay comprises an induction overcurrent unit with wound shading coils.

This is a special type of relay which employs a directional high speed induction cup
unit.

The directional unit is a hgh speed, low inertia four pole induction cup movement
designed to give a high steady and non-vibrating torque.

It not only senses direction flow but also measures magnitude of power flow.

It is normally provided with voltage polarising coils, if required current polarising coils
can be provided.
OMICRON CMC 256plus:
The CMC 256plus is the first choice for
applications requiring very high accuracy.

This unit is not only an excellent test set

for protection devices of all kinds but also
a universal calibration tool.

Its high precision allows the calibration of

a wide range of measuring devices,
including : energy meters of class 0.2S,
measuring transducers, power quality
measurement devices and phasor
measurement units (PMU).

Its unique accuracy and flexibility make

the CMC 256plus ideal for protection and
measurement equipment manufacturers
for research and development, production
and type testing.
Operation: PC or CMC Control
