Jesus Ministry

John Ch 1 & 2
John 1:35-51
35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,
36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, Behold, ithe Lamb of God!
37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.
38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, jWhat are you seeking? And they said to him, kRabbi (which means
Teacher), where are you staying?
39 He said to them, Come and you will see. So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for
it was about the tenth hour.10
40 lOne of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus 11 was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.
41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, We have found mthe Messiah (which means Christ).
42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, You are Simon the son of nJohn. You shall be called oCephas (which
means pPeter12).
43 qThe next day Jesus decided rto go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, Follow me.
44 Now sPhilip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
45 Philip found tNathanael and said to him, We have found him of whom uMoses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus
vof Nazareth, wthe son of Joseph.

46 Nathanael said to him, xCan anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see.
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, Behold, yan Israelite indeed, zin whom there is no deceit!
48 Nathanael said to him, How ado you know me? Jesus answered him, Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig
tree, I saw you.
49 Nathanael answered him, bRabbi, cyou are the Son of God! You are the dKing of Israel!
50 Jesus answered him, Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than
these.
51 And he said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you,13 you will see eheaven opened, and fthe angels of God ascending and descending
on gthe Son of Man.
Harmonize John 1:35-42 and Matthew, Mark & Luke
Mark 1:16hPassing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the
sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, Follow me, and I will make you become ifishers of men.6 18 And
immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and
John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father
Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.

John tells of the disciples spiritual conversion.

Mark, Matthew (4:18-22), and Luke (5:1-11) deal with the disciples call to service as
fishers of men.
Conversion of the first Apostles
1. Who were the first five apostles that John tells us about?

2. They did not all come to God the same way. What does this say about Gods
sovereignty in regards to salvation?

3. Which apostles came to Christ by responding to the words of a preacher?

4. Which apostle was personally sought out by Christ?

5. Which apostles were brought to Christ by a friend or brother?

Evangelism
1. God puts the preaching of the Word as first importance when saving souls.
Which preacher illustrates this point? What was his message?

2. Andrew and Philip illustrate that God uses personal conversation and
relationships to save souls. What can we learn from them? Why is it so difficult to
witness to family?

3. Even if preachers are unfaithful, individuals are apathetic, or resources are

scarce, God still goes forth to seek and save lost sinners.
Look at the key word found in verses 43 and 45. Complete the triangle of
seeking and finding.
V35-37
No sincere soul seeks Christ in vain. Seek and you will find.
1. What evidence proves that Andrew and John were seeking Christ?
2. Why dont people find Christ?

V38
3. What would be your answer to Jesus question: What are you seeking - i.e.
on what is your heart set?
4. What is revealed by Andrew and Johns question - Where are you staying?

V40-41
5. It takes no college training, no authority from the church, and no extraordinary
skill to do what Andrew, John, and Philip did. You cannot introduce someone to a
person you do not know. What does this teach us about witnessing?
V42 -
1. Jesus called Simon Cephas (Aramaic for rock). Peter is the English form of
Petros (Greek for stone). What does this have to do with 1 Peter 2:5?
V43 -
2. Luke 19:10 says, For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.
How does this John 1:43 illustrate this?

V44-46 -
3. The one who seeks to win souls must expect to be met with objections. What
did Philip say in reply to Nathanaels question?

4. What does Philips reply teach us about evangelism?

V47-51
5. How was Jesus reply to Nathanael evidence of the Deity of Christ?
6. What was Nathanaels confession?
7. How does Jesus response reveal He is the ladder that links earth to heaven?
The Seven Witness Challenge
In Johns Gospel exactly seven people bear witness to Christs Deity.

Can you identify them?

A. John 1:34

B. John 1:49

C. John 6:69

D. John 10:36

E. John 11:27

F. John 20:28
