INTRODUCTION

Windows 7 (codenamed Vienna, formerly Blackcomb) is a personal


computer operating system developed by Microsoft.

Windows 7 was released to manufacturing on July 22, 2009, and


became generally available on October 22, 2009, less than three years
after the release of its predecessor, Windows Vista.

Windows 7 was primarily intended to be an incremental upgrade to the


operating system intending to address Windows Vistas poor critical
reception while maintaining hardware and software compatibility.
HISTORY
In July 2007, six months following the public release of
Vista, it was reported that the next version of Windows
would then be codenamed Windows 7, with plans for a
final release within three years.
. Speaking about Windows 7 on October 16, 2008,
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed compatibility
between Windows Vista and Windows 7, indicating that
Windows 7 would be a refined version of Windows
Vista.
Microsoft released Windows 7 to MSDN and TechNet
subscribers on August 6, 2009, at 10:00 am PDT

Advancements in touch , speech, and handwriting recognition, support for


virtual disks, support for additional file formats.

Improved performance on multi-core processors, improved boot


performance, and kernel improvements.

For original equipment manufacturers and enterprises, windows 7


natively supports the ability to customize the wallpaper that is displayed
during user login.

The windows 7 taskbar is more application oriented than window


oriented, and therefore does not show window titles.
MERITS

Easier and faster access to administrative tools


and settings.
Faster than preceding Windows.
Enhanced feature.
The bit locker is a feature which provides the
encryption for the internal drives in Vista , but it
is extended to the external drives in windows 7
which makes backup and restore much easier .
DEMERITS

Windows 7 needs RAM capacity of at least 1 GB.


No in place upgrade option from Windows XP.
Cant be changed again without full reinstall.
Some old software doesnt work.
Expensive than the previous Microsoft operating
systems.

Both operating system now occupy
a distinctly different part of the
market.
Linux is completely open, out of the
box, even boasts better media
format support than windows and it
can be the only way to run older
hardware at its fullest potential,
especially if there isnt a new driver
for windows 7.
Windows 7 enables faster transfer
of large files whereas Linux
supports smaller installation size.
CONCLUSION
Windows 7 was primarily intended to be an
incremental upgrade to the operating system,
intending to address Windows Vistas poor critical
reception while maintain hardware and software
compatibility.
Windows 7 continued improvement on Windows.
Also with the addition a redesigned task bar , that
allows application to be pinned to it and new window
management features.
In contrast to windows vista windows 7 was generally
praised by critics , who considered the operating
system to be a major improvement .
