Bio plastics Global Market and
trends

Critical drivers are accelerating the growth of the bio plastics

market globally.
Many of these are relevant in the Indian context too.
Increasing eco-awareness among consumers
Corporates becoming more focused on sustainability
Mandates & regulations
Technology stabilization
Cost reduction
Challenges For Bio plastics
At the same time, bioplastics face critical challenges before they
achieve large scale market penetration.
They are much more costly than conventional plastics (could be 2-4
times as costly, depending on product)
Substitutes some of them authentic and some not-so authentic
substitutes also present competitive challenges to the adoption of bio
plastics in many mainstream markets
Customer awareness a number of misconceptions result in a poor and
sometime faulty understanding of the market, resulting in delays in
investment decision-making
Upstream technology is still evolving, and hence there are uncertainties
in technologies and processes
Uncertainties present in post-use processing and end of life options for
bio plastics
Plastic bags are one of the most obvious displays of our
throw-away society.
In Australia alone, we use over 4 billion single-use plastic
bags every year, that's over 10 million each day! Plus,
the life of a plastic bag once it's in the hand of a shopper
can be counted in minutes, and because only 3% of
them are currently being recycled, 200,000 bags are
dumped in landfill every hour, and they take between 15
and 1000 years to degrade
Starch based Bioplastics Market by Technology (Blow
Moulding, Extrusion, Injection Molding, and Others), Type
(Starch Blended with PLA, Starch Blended with PHA, and
Others), and Application (Rigid Packaging, Flexible
Packaging, Textile, Agriculture & Horticulture, Consumer
Goods, Automotive Transport, Electrical & Electronics,
Building & Construction, and Others) - Global Opportunity
Analysis and Industry Forecast, 2017-2023
Starch-based Bio plastics Market Overview:

Global Starch-based Bio plastics Market was valued at $424 million in 2016, and is expected to
reach $561 million by 2023, registering a CAGR of 3.7% from 2017 to 2023.

Starch is defined as a natural polymer that possesses many unique properties, which make it
ideal for packaging and edible film applications.

Starch-based bio plastics are produced from starch, blended with thermoplastic polyesters with
an aim to obtain a biodegradable and compostable product.

The properties of these bio plastics are similar to those of low-density polyethylene (LDPE),
and thus are used to manufacture bags for recycling organic waste, packaging & packaging
materials, hygiene products, and in agriculture Therefore, by combining the individual
advantages of starch and synthetic polymers, starch-based completely biodegradable polymers
(SCBP) are applicable in biomedical and environmental fields.

Moreover, starch-based bio plastics are extensively implemented in the medical industry owing
to their enhanced biocompatibility, non-toxicity, better mechanical properties, and degradation
properties as required.
