INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS AUCTIONEERING CONTROL ?

There are conditions in process plant where multiple process

measurement are available for particular variable that needs to be
regulated through a single control action.
Thus it is evident that the said control action should be given based
on the most critical measurement conditions for process variable.
This termed as AUCTIONEERING CONTROL.
In Auctioneering control system the manipulated variable is
controlled by measuring at different points of the system and
corresponding action to be preferred is sent to the controller to
maintain a manipulated variable at desired set point.

WHY
AUCTIONEERING
CONTROL ??
In many exothermic reaction usually in reactor or storage tank
temperature is varies along the length of reactor and storage tank.

There is a clear HOTSPOT somewhere in tank or reactor which may

causes damage to the body as well as liquid present in tank or reactor.

It is not necessary that hot spot will occurs at same point. Therefore
we have to place a sensor at appropriate location.

Unfortunately, things are never simple and the position of the hotspot
can move up and down the length of the reactor depends on flows
and compositions of various streams.
LITERATURE
SURVEY
Temperature and humidity auctioneering control By Eric W. Grald, J. War MacArthur.
Publication number : US4889280 A, Publication date : Dec 26, 1989
An acutioneering control adapted to be connected to a thermostat control for
temperature modifying apparatus wherein the thermostat control includes a temperature
sensor which provides a sensed temperature signal. The auctioneering control includes
apparatus for sensing absolute humidity and providing a first output signal corresponding to
the sensed absolute humidity; first apparatus for comparing the sensed absolute humidity
with a predetermined value wherein the first comparing apparatus receives the first output
signal
Double auctioneering control circuit By Reuther John F . Publication number : US3209233 A,
Publication date: Sep 28, 1965
J. F. Reuther et al. and assigned to the same assignee as the present application, disclosed a
single auctioneering or control circuit in which the output is responsive to or varies with only
the larger or the smaller of two input control currents. In certain types of electrical control
apparatus, such as the type which includes magnetic amplifiers, it is sometimes necessary
to provide a double auctioneering or control circuit that is responsive to or varies with an
input signal within upper and lower limits, as established by two additional input signals. This
invention relates to electrical apparatus for performing this double auctioneering function.
Auctioneering circuitry By Wolfgang M. Kendziorek. Publication number : US3103594 A, Publication
Date : Sep 10, 1963
The normal auctioneering circuit is one in which the highest of two or more signals determines the
output signal. A circuit is also known wherein the lowest signal of a plurality of signals determines the
output signal. The known circuitry was, however, found not to satisfy the demands of modern
systems with regard to output mange, linearity, and accuracy. To meet the exacting demands of
present-day electrical control systems the circuitry herein disclosed was developed. One object of
this invention is the provision of auctioneering circuitry having an increased accuracy over
heretofore known auctioneering circuitry.

Case Study on Tubular Reactor Hot-Spot Temperature Control for Throughput Maximization By

Auctioneering hot-spot temperature control of a highly exothermic cooled tubular reactor
(constant coolant temperature) for cumene production via the irreversible gas-phase alkylation of
benzene with propylene (A + B C) is studied. Specifically, three control configurations are
quantitatively evaluated for tightness of hot-spot temperature control and maximum achievable
process throughput with reactor cooling duty as the bottleneck constraint. The configurations
manipulate respectively the reactor cooling duty (CS1), the reactor inlet temperature (CS2), and
the fresh propylene feed (CS3) for regulating the hot-spot temperature. Plantwide dynamic
simulation results show that tightest hot-spot temperature control is achieved by the direct
manipulation of the reactor cooling duty (CS1). Use of reactor inlet temperature as the
manipulation handle (CS2) is not recommended due to large deviations in the reactor temperature
profile for a throughput increase. Manipulating the fresh propylene feed rate (limiting reactant) as
in CS3 provides loose but acceptable hot-spot temperature control. CS3 is most preferred for
throughput maximization as the reactor is operated at the bottleneck constraint of maximum heat
removal capacity. For the sample case study, the maximum achievable throughput increases by
more than 7% by use of CS3 (over CS1).

HEATER
WORKING
The fluid is enter inside the tube.
The heat inside the reactor is generated by passing the current
through the heating element i.e. heater which is placed inside the
tube reactor.
The hotspot is generated at the upstream in the tube by passing more
current through the heater which placed at upstream inside the tube.
Once the hotspot is generate i.e. the temperature above the set point
or high value, its sense by the temperature sensor and gives the signal
to the controller.
According to the signal coming from sensor the controller send the
signal to the solenoid valve and valve allows the coolant to flow
through the outer jacket of the tube and heat transfer action will take
place.
Due to the heat transfer action the hotspot inside the tube is
eliminated and returned back to the set point temperature.
