POSITIONING Of
Heat Pump & Heat
Engine
When process have significant power demand,
usually in compressor loads,it is normally sound
practice to operate at or near the minimum utility
for heating and cooling.
Townsend and linhoff make recommendations
concerning the positioning of heat engines and
heat pumps relative to pinch.
Fig 1 shown the position of temperature interval above
and below pinch. Fig (a) is above pinch and Fig (b) is
below pinch.
Closed cycle in which condensate, at T1 and Pc
is pumped to T2 and PB and sent to boiler, where
it is superheated vapour at T3 and Pb.
The boiler effluent is expanded across a turbine
to The and Pc, before it is condensed. The net
energy Qb-Qc,is converted to the net power
Wout-Win, typically a thermodynamic efficiency
of about 35%.
In fig (a) heat engine position ed above the
pinch, to satisfy the demand for hot utility
Qhu,QB is required by the boiler and net power
produced is Wout. Wout is produced by
equivalent heat to Qhu.
In fig (c) where heat engine is positioned below
the pinch, the heat that would be rejected to cold
utility,Qcu is sent to boiler.Wout recoverd from
the turbine and the reminder is rejected to the
cold utilities.
In fig (b) heat engine accepting heat above pinch and
rejecting heat below pinch.total utility above the pinch
are incremented by QB and below pinch the cold
utilities are incremented by Qb-Wout.
A typical pump is shown in fig (2),where saturated
vapour at T1 and Pb is compressed to T2 and Pc
and condensed by rejecting it's heat.the
condenser effluent at T3 and Pc.
