SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE
- South African Police (SAP),
national police force from
1913-1994. Had 65,000
members.
- National Party came into
power in 1948, and
strengthened their power.

- Brutally stop disorder

- Counterinsurgency actions

- Search anything and anyone


without a warrant.
ENFORCING APARTHEID
- Police formed a hit squad to capture and
kill anti-apartheid activists.

- To enforced Apartheid:

- Forced removals

- 2 levels of apartheid:

- Grand Apartheid: separate large areas

- Petty Apartheid: separate public facilities


and everyday places.
PASS LAWS

- Pass laws were introduced to


control the movement of
African, Indian and coloured
people.

- They were enforced in the 18th


and 19th centuries.

- Pass outlined all personal and


identification information.

- Police could demand for pass


papers at any time.
POLICE BRUTALITY
ACTIVITY 1
- The African National Congress (ANC)
and the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC)
SHARPEVILLE MASSACRE planned separate anti-pass
campaigns.

- Aim: total abolition of pass laws.

- SUPPORT

- PAC believed if thousands of people


were arrested, jails would be filled,
economy comes to a standstill.

- Campaigns should be non-violent.

- PAC threatened people if they did not


take part.
