The History of women serving in the

military stretches to over 600 years ago


from a range of different traditions and
cultures.

About 203,000, or 14.5% of the active-


duty force are women out of nearly 1.4
million in the military.
Joanof Arc was a well known woman
involved in the military in France who led
them to victory over the British 600 years
ago under the divine guidance from God.

From 1775-1783 women were only
allowed to register as nurses, water
bearers, cooks and support roles in the
army.
From 1846-1848 was the Mexican War
and Civil War.

winter camp at Colorado, before she was
discovered to be a woman and
discharged.
From 1917-1918 21,480 nurses serve in
the military but over 400 die from highly
contagious influenza on the front line.
In WW2 67 Army Nurses were captured
by the Japanese and held captive. Women
are offered a few more jobs as
communications, intelligence, supply,
medicine, administration, clerks,
mechanics etc.
Roza Shanina volunteered for the Red
Army in 1941 and chose to be a
markswoman on the frontline.
She was able to shoot 59 Nazis and was
the first Soviet Sniper woman to receive
the Order of Glory for her bravery and
marksmanship. She died in action in
1945.
1972: The Reserve Officer Training
Corps (ROTC) is opened to Army and
Navy women.
The first woman in the history of the
armed forces is promoted to major
general.
An Army woman becomes the first woman
military helicopter pilot.
The Coast Guard opens all assignments to
women.
The Air Force selects the first woman aviator
for Test Pilot School.
Woman fighter pilot delivers a payload of
missiles and laser-guided bombs in combat.
She is in the first wave of US strikes against
Iraq in Operation Desert Fox.
They are trained in forensics, evidence
collection, tactical questioning, vehicle
and personnel searches, instructions on
how homemade explosive devices are
made and how to recognize if a device is
homemade. Etc.
New opportunities are open for women to
serve on the frontline alongside men.
There is still large debates on this issue
