Silverwing view is that
1) All MFL results should NOT be
cross checked with another inspection
technique (usually UT).
2) The UT results are always ONLY used
to validate the MFL results.
3) Silverwing recommendation is that only 10% of
the floor plates with corrosion in excess of 40%
or the client defined threshold shall be validated.

Limitations - Manual mode

Detect only system with no CAD drawings
or data storage.
MFL scanning is restricted to rectangular
or slightly inclined plates only.
Cannot be used to scan small patch
plates.
To access a tank the minimum largest
opening should be at least 18 inches

Not used to detect cracks or laminations -
only for detection of corrosion defects.
MFL corrosion detection limitations

above 12.5 mm are:-
Up to 15mm plate above 50% corrosion detection

discriminated by the unit and is
normally verified using UT for soil side
and Pit gauging / Visual for product

Tank Coverage effectiveness of MFL inspection
is also affected by presence of:

Petal Plate floor designs should be

scanned in the MANUAL MODE only.

Never try to use the motors to free the

scanner if the magnets become caught on
the edge of a plate. This can lead to
electrical overload which shall result in
blown track on the main board PCB.

over welds, spatter, nonmagnetic debris

If your calibration is correct an

isolated bacterial or pipe defect
less than 1.5mm diameter SHALL
be detected but the defect maybe
undersized.

The Bridge plate is the connecting

medium for the magnetic pole pieces
on each side of the magnetic carrier.
The Bridge plate thickness must be

Backup automatically transfers data
to a USB flash memory device
(removable hard drive).
A folder called FM_Backup is created

on the USB drive. Inside the
FM_Backup folder a folder is created
for each project. This folder contains
the inspection data files.

Transfer data allows users to select
individual files and transfer them to the
location of their choice.
NOTE : Use of non dedicated USB to
the Sitemaster 400 can lead to a virus
attack corrupting the Data acquisition
software, the acquired scanned data
& also loss of precious time ! ! !

It is recommended that the reporting
Laptop dedicated for the FloormapVS
reporting software has Windows
XP Professional Edition and NOT
Windows Vista OR Home Edition
Windows Vista can be used but needs
an ICT person to close down
programmes in the background to free
up the processor.

Data transfer
Note: The inspection data will be
contained in a folder name using the
customer name, location and tank id.
This folder will contain a folder named
scan which contains the data files
(.FM2) and a configuration file (.IVS).
The folder named scan and the
configuration file are both needed
for the correct operation of the
reporting software. The data
acquisition stores data in the following
location:
C/Program Files/Silverwing/Data

Not used to detect cracks or

Limitations / Potential problems

Shot from cleaning process can get
embedded in rollers.
Explain the problems dust can cause
(getting stuck between rollers and
magnets) especially if it gets wet.
This can slow the machine and cause
inaccurate readings. The extra strain
put on the motor can also cause a
blown track on the Mother board PCB.

Install each piece of software in turn
starting at the top and moving down.
Pressing each button will start the
installation wizard for that software.
Just accept the license agreements
and press next to follow the wizard
and install the software.
There are no nasty surprises. Allow
each software installation to finish
before starting the next one.

When you try to run the full version for

the first time the product activation
window will start.
Enter a user name, a company name
and then press Generate Serial.
Make a record of the User Name,
Company Name and Serial Number

product activation key. Enter this
number in the appropriate box and
press the verify button. You
should then be able to run the
software.

activation window, press the print
screen button on the keyboard (Prt
Sc). You can then open a program
such as paint or word and paste this
info to make a permanent record.
Holding down the Alt button when
you press print screen only copies
the active window (not the entire
screen).

When installing a newer version of the
reporting software (full version)
UPGRADE it is not necessary to
remove the previous version.
If the previous version has not been
removed the new version will not
require re-activation.

does not need activating. It will run
immediately once it has been
installed.
The full version requires activation.
When you try to run the full version for
the first time the product activation
window will start.

It is very important to understand
the difference between raw data and
tank files.
Raw data comes directly from the
scanner, users will then edit the
data, add other inspection results,
add symbols such as man ways,
pipes etc.
This data is then saved as tank files.
For the time being load the example
tank.

is the corner of the plate from which the
scanning began.
If you zoom in you should start to see

if we go to plate view.
There are 2 ways to get to plate view:
Either double click on a plate from tank view
or click on the plate view button at the top of
the screen.

can be hidden or shown at the left
hand side of the screen.

across the plate. This is how we can

square on the plate. Other patches
can be added as needed.

list can be printed with the report and
given to the tank repair company as a

Edit Data this screen is where defects
may be added, modified or removed and
defect percentages changed.
Tank Layout modification- Sometimes
the plate layout cannot be accurately drawn
automatically using the reporting software.
Use the Tank Layout Modification tool to drag
plates to the correct place. Use the right
mouse button to drag the entire tank.
Plate selector Choose either inner
plates or annular plates. And choose the plate
number you want to edit.

this part of the software to
add defects to the
selected plate. There are
2 methods to add defects.
1) Enter x and y
coordinates, enter the
defect percentage,
enter the defect type.
(Floormap, Visual, UT or
Handscan), pressing
apply defect puts a
defect of the correct
colour at the area you
specified.
2) Right click anywhere on the plate and
click Add Defect. This sets the X and Y
co-ordinates so the user only needs to enter
the defect percentage and the defect type
Press apply defect to enter that defect.
NOTE:
1) It is not possible to change the
Length and Width of a plate
2) It is not possible to change the
start date of inspection.
Even if you attempt to change
the start date on screen, still it
will print the original start date of
inspection.

Edit or Delete defects Right click on a
defect and click delete defect to remove
defects. Right click on a defect and click on
edit defect to adjust the value of an
individual defect. Click on apply defect to
apply the changes.

the project details originally entered into
the Data Acquisition software.
Useful for correcting spelling mistakes.

This is where users can
load data taken
from previous
inspections of the
same tank. Move a slide
bar to gradually adjust
the colours from the old
data to the new data. You
can see how the
corrosion has grown
over the years and
identify any new
corrosion.

window, use this window to
make visual comparisons
between the original inspection
data and the new inspection

Users can use this to adjust data
either plate by plate or for the entire
tank. Use the slide bar to set the

adjust by.
CAUTION : Once a percentage
reduction is done it affects the full
tank / plate.

to add weld defects to the report.

NOTE : When we require photos to

be added to the report ensure that
the details of each photo is
recorded and insert photos in the
report after the MFL scans are
completed and final report is
prepared.
If we insert photos on a day-to-day
basis the data may be corrupted
and we may not be able to read
those photos.

Saving Tank Files
Click file, then save. You will be
asked to enter a filename. Once you
have entered the filename and hit save
a folder will be created containing the
tank file and associated plate files.

Next click on file then import
and then import additional
FloormapVS data. New files will
be added, existing files will be
ignored and dummy plates will be
created for any missing plates and

Select pages to Print Simply add or
remove ticks to include (or not include)

Choose plates to print Either print all
plates or select the plate range. To print

threshold. Moving the bar adjusts which
defects will be printed out.
Change logo Users can change the

logo that is printed on the report cover.
The logo picture ratio should be 3:1. Jpeg
or Bitmap files can be used.

Caution in Report Submission.

Cross check the total number of
plates on the plate statistics report
does not include any Ghost plates
caused by operator errors which may
occur due to;
1)Use of virus infected memory sticks
resulting is a Sitemaster400 computer
crash.
2) Attempted Shortcut by trying to Copy /
Rename plates from other areas of the
tank.
3) Operator scanned the plates in error,
possibly forgetting to enter the new row
number.

3.0 Loading into Transit case:

Correct positioning of transit clamp and
transit hook at all times even when site
transit in back of pick up. This shall also
prolong gas strut life.
Check proper fixing of transit clamp screws
SM 1000 should be placed face down with

mounting brackets in bubble wrap.
Correct placement of box stuffing sponges.

4.1 Maintenance - Daily as required

PLUS :
CHECK USB for VIRUS every time

just in case ! ! !
Remove any dust or metal particles stuck to

the magnet bridge or between the Magnet
Bridge and rollers (frequency will depend on
conditions in tank).
Remove any foreign objects embedded in

the rollers and wheels.

4.1 Maintenance
Clean any dirt or foreign objects from
encoder gears
(frequency will depend on
conditions in tank)
Check encoder gears are turning freely

and there is sufficient backlash
(clearance) between encoder gears.
Charge batteries

4.2 Maintenance - Post Inspection

As per DAILY PLUS
Carefully clean scanner
Fully charge all batteries
Remove sensor head; lubricate the

sensor head drop arms with small
amounts of silicone grease if required.
Check encoder retaining bolts are

secure.
Ensure rollers are running freely.

Check and tighten all fixings as
needed.
Check Gas Strut operation. Ensure
Gas Strut has sufficient strength and
is not bent or distorted
Carefully clean Site master computer
screen using small amounts of PC
screen cleaner and a soft cloth.

Set the system to manual mode /

auto stop ON / low threshold setting
and check function of all sensors by
passing a small magnet along the
sensor head. All channels LEDs
should illuminate and stay latched on.
Transfer any tank data collected and

back-up to a safe place

4.3 Maintenance 6 MONTHLY :

Carry out the Daily & Post
Inspection Maintenance PLUS
the following:
Check Drive-Handle Operation. Clean
and lubricate with small amounts of
light oil if required.
Back up all inspection data from Site
master Computer
Use the windows Disk Cleanup tool
to remove unwanted files from the
Site master computer

TIP 1 : If you suddenly start getting

AUTO scanning
A) Does your battery need to be

changed to a fully charged battery?
B) Is there a lot of rust or oxide

adhering to the magnet and scanner
giving false indication of
discontinuities ?
5.0 Fault Finding :
TIP 2 : In Manual OR AUTO scanning if

your scanner does not go as intended but
vibrates, check
A) Is the allen bolt of the motor wheel in
place or has it become loose ?
B) Is the LOCK KEY for the wheel in its

intended slot OR has it slipped off ?
C) Are the bolts on the rollers loose OR

fallen off ?

5.0 Fault Finding :
TIP 3 : In AUTO scanning the

distance mapped is not correct
A) Check if the encoder has not
become loose. If it is loose
tighten it.

5.0 Fault Finding :
TIP 4 : In AUTO scanning if your scanner

overshoots the programmed scan length
on a loose oxidised and flaky surface of the
tank floor before completing the scan on
the plate it indicates
A) wheels slipped during intended scans.
B) Encoder setting may have been changed

during faulty operation.
C) Error may have happened in noting the

correct length of the plate
