Definition of Blended Learning

Blended learning is an education program (formal

or non-formal) that combines online digital media
with traditional classroom methods. It requires the
physical presence of both teacher and student,
with some element of student control over time,
place, path, or pace.

Blended learning does not occur simply by adding a few online

strategies to a traditional classroom. Successful blended learning

requires an intentional and integrated approach (Zenger and

Uehlein, 2001). The blend of methods should depend upon the

needs of the students and the school.

Why Implement Blended Learning?
•Blended learning allows teachers and schools to address a variety of
learning styles with a variation of instructional methods (Wiffin, 2002).

•Blended learning practices in the K-12 environment increase student motivation

(Berson, 1996;Lipscomb, 2003; Pye & Sullivan, 2001; Scheidet, 2003; Wellman &
Flores, 2002;).

•Blended learning allows for more personalized instruction.

•Blended learning provides opportunities for teachers to use online curriculum for basic
information and for extensions/review and class time for higher order thinking
activities.

•Blended learning frequently provides a higher level of interaction than commonly

experienced in face to face courses. (Dziuban, Hartman, & Moskal, 2004; Waddoups &
Howell, 2002; Wingard, 2004).
Implementation Strategies
•There is no universal approach to implementing blended learning.

•There are some fundamental questions that teachers and schools

need to consider in determining the most effective approach to
implement blended learning.

•Michael Horne has identified 6 different models of blended

instruction. These help in understanding what a blended environment
may “look” like.
In its basic and simplest definition, blended learning is an
instructional methodology, a teaching and learning approach that
combines face-to-face classroom methods with computer mediated
activities to deliver instruction. The strengths of this instructional
approach is its combination of both face to face and online
teaching methods into one integrated instructional approach. So,
here I am going to share a set of some useful web tools you can
use for blended learning in your 21st century classrooms:
Edmodo

Edmodo is one the popular website for the educators where they can share ideas and resources with

their students. It is a free and safe social learning environment where educators can deliver best

teaching strategies. There are three different ways you can sign-up with Edmodo; as a teacher,

parents and students.

Why Edmodo for Blended Learning?

Edmodo is among very useful tool for blended learning. It can be used to framework assignments

and resources for the classroom.

•Teachers can make post for their student just like on Facebook.

•Educators can organise students into groups at Edmodo. They can ask students to join the

group.

•Teachers can give feedback and badges to their students.

•Edmodo account of both teachers and students can be linked using Google drive account.
Kahoot

Kahoot is an easy to use game based blended learning tool. It enables educators to assess

learners in a visual bar graph meanwhile students take control of their own learning. This

game-based platform is very entertaining that encourage creativity in the students. Kahoot is a

great platform to make learning with fun.
